I was pleased to hear that Moon Lake Park was transferred to the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, saving one of our area’s natural assets for we the people to enjoy for future generations.
I served as Pennsylvania conservation officer for 18 years and patrolled Moon Lake in Luzerne County. I would like to make a request on the naming of Moon Lake Park to DCNR Pat Solano, Moon Lake Park.
Mr. Solano served many years in Harrisburg and worked under many governors of both parties. I have known Mr. Solano for more than 43 years when I founded the Susquehanna River Watch Inc. He attended many of our conferences and bus tours to observe and appreciate what measures needed to be taken to protect our environment.
He would always state how he remembers taking a bus trip from the county courthouse to West Pittston to West Nanticoke with our state lawmakers to witness our environmental problems: littering, illegal dumping in our area parks and pollution of our river and tributaries.
We were blessed when Mr. Pat Solano became DCNR secretary, and I had the privilege of being in direct contact with him. He told me if I had any environmental problems to contact him at his personal telephone number. One incident I recall involved the Nesbitt/Kirby park areas; he toured them and stated if the city of Wilkes-Barre doesn’t want to maintain the park, he would see what he could do as DCNR secretary.
I was appointed by state Sen. Ray Musto and DCNR Secretary Pat Solano to serve on the DCNR Advisory Recreation Board, which I did for 10 years.
This letter is not about me, it is about Mr. Pat Solano, who over the years served the people of this commonwealth and Luzerne County.
Being that Mr. Solano has served as DCNR secretary and is from Luzerne County, I ask Moon Lake Park be named Pat Solano DCNR State Park in his honor.
We have honored our Luzerne County native, Frances Slocum, with a state park. Let’s honor Luzerne County native Pat Solano, who unselfishly served his country, commonwealth and his community.
