Misericordia University is presenting the cool jazz sounds of the Rich Goldstein/Andy LaVerne Quartet on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Lemmond Theater at Walsh Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
With dramatic hooks and cool rhythms, Goldstein’s originality and mastery in jazz guitar leads the quartet into exciting levels in modern hard bop style. He earned his bachelor’s degree from The Hartt School, University of Hartford. Since graduating, he has been involved as a dedicated Hartt faculty member and performer. Goldstein has appeared with a wide range of musicians including Charles Flores, Horacio Hernandez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Houston Person, Stan Hope and Warren Chaisson. He has performed at some of the nation’s best jazz venues and festivals including Birdland, Trumpets, The Atlanta Jazz Festival, The Cancun Jazz Festival and The International Jazz Fest. His recordings include “Reminiscence and “Something Makes Me Want to Dance.”
LaVerne is a jazz pianist, composer and arranger who studied at Julliard, Berklee and the New England Conservator. He has worked with Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Lionel Hampton and many others. A prolific recording artist, his projects as a leader include more than 45 recordings. The most recent recording, “Timeline,” is a duo recording with guitarist John Abercrombie. LaVerne, a Yamaha Artist, is also a prominent jazz educator, having released a series of instructional videos including “Guide to Modern Jazz Piano, Vols. 1 & 2,” and “Jazz Piano Standards. He is a featured contributor to Keyboard Magazine, Piano Today and numerous other publications. He is the recipient of five Jazz Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Meet the Composer grant and his song, “Shania,” was named a winner of The John Lennon Songwriting Contest. He has appeared in concerts, festivals and clubs throughout the world.
