The West Pittston Historical Society will be presenting a program on Sunday, November 15, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Exeter Avenue, West Pittston.
On the day of the Exeter Shaft disaster November 5, 1898, seven men were immediately killed when loaded coal cars plunged down the shaft as the men were reporting to work that morning. This program will detail the events of that day and the investigation that followed. Featured speaker for this program is Robert Wolensky, Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. Wolensky is also the author of several books on NEPA historical topics. Also presenting is local historian and retired miner, William Hastie. This program is free and open to the public. The Society’s mission is to raise awareness of the historical assets of West Pittston and to preserve them for future generations. The West Pittston Historical Society is currently accepting memberships. For membership information, contact Drew at 655-1776. For program information email: info@westpittstonhistory.org
