Rev. Sauers to be honored today

Today, Sunday Nov. 8, the local community will come together to help celebrate the 55th Ordination Anniversary of Rev. Robert F. Sauers.

Rev. Sauers was ordained in 1954 after serving in the U.S. Navy and attending college. In 1956 Rev. Sauers became the pastor at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hughestown and remained there for the next 36 years. During that time, he also served the local community in many ways. Rev. Sauers is a member and past president of the Pittston Rotary Club. In 1990 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor given by the Rotary International.

Rev. Sauers also served as a past president of the Lutheran Welfare Service of NEPA. He has served on the board of the former Pittston Hospital, the advisory board of Northeastern Pennsylvania Blue Cross and has been involved with the Hughestown Park Recreation Committee and Hughestown Fire Department.

After his retirement from St. Peter’s, Rev. Sauers served as a supply pastor for many years and is currently the part-time pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre. The celebration will be held at Colarusso’s La Palazzo, Birney Avenue in Moosic. It will begin with a cocktail hour starting at 3 p.m. with dinner and a ceremony to follow.
