Y EXERCISE
By Laura Cowher
Staying physically fit has paid off for Greater Pittston YMCA member Edward Supinski. Ed took the Fit To Be Tried challenge earlier this year at the Pittston organization and won a trip to Cancun.
Fourteen YMCAs participated in the Fit To Be Tried contest this year, which allowed new members to join the organizations at a reduced rate. New and existing members were allowed to take a chance on the Cancun trip and other prizes each time they came to the Pittston facility to exercise.
“We are just trying to make the community healthier,” said Mike Riddle, program director. “We gave them incentives to join the YMCA.”
A winner was chosen from each of the 14 YMCAs this winter. The winners and Y representatives gathered at Rodano’s in Wilkes-Barre in February for the grand prize drawing. Ed was the grand prize winner. Four prizes including a gas card and exercise bike were awarded.
“We came together and got sponsorships from different vendors,” said Riddle.
Ed has been a long-time member of the Greater Pittston YMCA. He first joined the Y nine years ago to improve his health.
“I came for health reasons,” he said. “I wanted to start losing weight and get in shape.”
Nine years later Ed is still going strong working out in the fitness center six times a week. This year was the first year he participated in the Fit To Be Tried contest.
Ed plans to travel to Cancun with his wife, Jeanette, in October.
