A reception on Friday, March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. affords an opportunity to meet Tarutis and discuss his work.

The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Tarutis is a local freelance photographer whose work frequently appears in The Sunday Dispatch.

He is a science professor at Lackawanna College in Scranton, but says he has been interested in photography ever since he was five years old and got his first camera.

As a teenager, he kept up with his hobby using a Polaroid camera. In 2001, Tarutis got his first digital camera, which he used mostly to take pictures of his family.

The coupling of photography with technology made the hobby even more interesting to him, he says.

This May, Tarutis, who has a doctorate degree, will graduate from Luzerne County Community College with an associate’s degree in photography.

There are 26 photographs in the exhibit showcasing different aspects of our local environment, a mix of nature, architecture/landmarks, with a little bit of local history thrown in.

Some of the pieces, Tarutis explains, are selective-focus images shot with a Lensbaby, some are macro (close-ups), some are infrared (the real thing, not a Photoshop filter), and a few are HDR (high dynamic range).

Tarutis shoots photos for the Dispatch and also for The Times Leader and its other weekly publications.

He says shooting sporting events is among his favorite subjects.

Tarutis was a PIAA high school official in basketball for 15 years and football for 20 years.
