‘PC Doctors’ part of healthy new Main Street

Sam Chiarelli Dispatch Correspondent

Bob Carey has opened his PC Doctors stores in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, but the new Pittston location has unique features all its own. As the name implies, anyone can bring their computer to the new store and have it repaired. PC Doctors also offers house calls and networking solutions for customers in the area, but the real attraction of the Pittston location is its LAN Center. A “LAN” is a “local area network” which allows for several computers to be linked together for a range of different uses, including online gaming, business meetings, and computer training.

Bob became interested in computers in the early 1980s and went to school in Florida studying them. He then worked for 20 years on a cruise ship circling the Hawaiian islands, spending his off-time in all sorts of places, but he returned home to northeastern Pennsylvania a few years ago with the idea of opening PC Doctors.

A friend told Carey that “Downtown Pittston was coming back” and that it would be a great place for him to expand his business. “I looked into it and really liked what I saw,” said Carey. “I liked Pittston because we wouldn’t have to charge people for house calls in the area between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.”

Carey also stated that phone calls between the two cities were long distance, but calling from Pittston to either city is not a long-distance call. This free communication between store locations helps him manage his business more easily.

PC Doctors is offering a range of services to customers at their Pittston location for seasoned PC aficionados and newcomers to computer technology alike.

Free training for people over 50 will be provided which serves as an “Introduction to Computers 101” class for those who are not overly familiar with computers. The store will also be offering business training at the LAN Center for businesses who need to train their employees in new software or make better use of existing software. The facility can also be used to hold video conferences with businesses around the world.

Carey is also working on bringing jobs to the area by supporting a brand new technology called remote repair or remote support. One engineer working at the LAN Center could see or control many other computers at once, allowing for a team of 10 employees to help 100 people all over the world with their computer problems.

Carey is interested in making this new technology the center-piece of his Pittston location and hopes that someday soon, national and international PC problems will be fixed from Pittston.

Another way PC Doctors is helping the area is to provide copy, fax, and print services to business people in the area. A number of businessmen have stopped into the store needing internet access or the use of a computer or fax machine and Carey and his team are able to provide these services. “We provide an office away from the office,” said Bob.

If you have been selling items on eBay, then the eBayer’s Paradise deal is another reason to come to PC Doctors. The Pittston location is offering free packaging on any item being sold on eBay as well as 10% off UPS Ground Shipping from the store.

Packaging items for mailing is always one of the most tedious parts of selling items online, but Carey has tried to make the process much simpler for his customers.

The clientele at PC Doctors is always changing and as Bob explained, much of the customers in the store vary by the time of day. “During the daytime business people may come in if they need a place to have meetings. We have a big screen and we can connect to other offices anywhere.” At night however, the kids take over. “We have lots of kids that come in and play games at night. Sometimes we have lock-ins and the kids can come and have pizza and have tournaments with all the latest games,” Carey said.

Of course, PC Doctors is also the place to take your computer when there is a problem with it.
