    I was fortunate to write an article for this past Wednesday’s special Sunday Dispatch Thanksgiving edition about Warren Pollard and the highly successful feast he and the folks of the First United Methodist Church do every Thanksgiving. I stopped by the church on Thanksgiving where Warren and company served approximately 70 guests a great turkey dinner.

    Luzerne Bank at their Branch in Wyoming is collecting "Toys for Tots". The collection box is in the bank lobby and they will be collecting Toys now until December 15. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

    Exeter Cub Scout Pack 310 and Boy Scout Troop 311 are participating in their annualScouting for Food Service Project on the weekends of December 6 and 7 and again on the 13 and 14.Scouts from both groups will leave a flyer on your doorstep asking for donations of non-perishable food products to be distributed to a local food Pantry. Place your donation in a grocery bag with the flyer attached on the day and time indicated on the flyer and a scout will pick it up.     The Wyoming Recreation Board recently held its Annual Halloween Parade at Butler Street Park, where children showed off their great costumes and were given some treats. Wyoming Crime Watch members were also on hand to provide Halloween bags and safety tips to all who attended. A random drawing was held for each of three age groups to award Halloween baskets filled with treats and Toys R Us gift cards. The winners of the Halloween baskets were Raul Lopez (5-8 years), Brianna Cheskiewicz (0-4 years) and Cole Keating (9-12 years).

    The West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival organization recently donated $200 each to the West Pittston Library and Salvation Army from proceeds of the 2008 Cherry Blossom Festival. Each year, the Cherry Blossom Festival committee gives back to the community from monies raised from the Festival.

    The members of the Exeter Park Volunteer Hose Company extend their thanks to all who visited their Trails of Terror fundraiser. The Trails were a great success and a large part of this success is due not only to the department members but to all the volunteers who visited the Trail and then asked to participate as members of the crew. A special thanks goes to the volunteers who worked long hours designing, creating, building and maintaining all the displays.

The Wyoming Recreation Board would like to extend their sincere thanks to Mr. Hizynski’s Social Studies classes. On October 18, Mr. Hizynski and some of his students volunteered their time and energy to clean up Butler Street Park.

I apologize to those of you who were unable to contact me this week due to the e-mail glitch or if you sent me something and it does not appear in this week’s column.     The Wyoming Free Library kicked off its annual campaign this week. The library uses funds from this drive to expand its book collection, as well as its DVD collection. The library has a comprehensive magazine collection and subscriptions to several newspapers.

  • Laflin Library has successful summer Reading program - 11/02/2008
    The Laflin Public Library closed their 2008 Summer Reading Program with a cookout on the borough playground for the children who participated. Reading certificates and prizes were awarded to each child. The Red Robin made an appearance and the children received Red Robin Certificates.

  • All Souls Day services today throughout borough - 11/02/2008
    Today is All Souls Day, a special day on the Catholic calendar where the faithful gather together to pray that their deceased loved ones will reach heaven. While praying for our beloved dead can bring us great comfort and keep our bond intact with them, it can also stir our emotions and cause us to relive some of the grief that we experienced when we first lost a dear friend or family member. While this is completely normal, it can also be painful. The good news is, you don’t have to experience these emotions alone. The Catholic community of Avoca has many services taking place today where we can gather together to celebrate the lives of our loved ones.

Members will be at the borough building on Eighth Street and Hose Co #2 on Stites Street beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will stay until all bags are distributed. The only requirement is a costume, no singing, dancing or joke telling is necessary.

    A community is coming together to aid a very determined young man, 10 year old Anthony D’Amico, son of Tony and Andrea D’Amico of Exeter. Anthony is suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A fund raiser is planned to help the family make modifications to their home and install an Aqua Sizer on November 9 from 3-10 p.m. at the West Pittston Moose Lodge.

    Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer commended officers from the borough police department for their work apprehending a suspect in a series of car break-ins. The individual is accused of at least seven burglaries in the borough. Boyer also advised residents to use caution in the Midway Shopping Center due to a purse snatching that took place there recently.

    Borough Council announced that Hughestown streets are being repaired and Pesotine Paving will do the project. Also, the Washington Terrace project is underway. The project should begin in about a week. Insurance coverage has been received from American Asphalt The Robert Yaple Memorial Park project will also get underway. New equipment will be purchased and set up for the Spring 2009 season. Again, thanks to Senator Ray Musto, Rep. Michael Carroll and project chairman Carmen Ambrosino.

    Religious education classes for Holy Rosary, Sacred Heart of Jesus, and St. Joseph Churches begin today at approximately 10:15 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary School, 125 Stephenson St. Those students who will receive Confirmation in May 2009 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church should follow their extra schedule along with the schedule that will be distributed at the registration session. Judy Lambert will serve as the program coordinator for all three of the churches.

    Members of the Wyoming United Methodist Church and Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Weightman, pastor, are preparing a celebration service for the 125th anniversary of the present church building. The church property was purchased in 1882 and the church building was dedicated in 1883. Services for the Methodists, who came to Wyoming Valley with the first settlers, began in 1793 at the home of Philip Jackson. Services were moved to other homes and were visited regularly by circuit riding preachers appointed by Bishop Francis Asbury. The congregation has a long history of faithful service to the community and world.

    The West Wyoming recreation board is once again selling "limited edition" Christmas ornaments. This year’s ornament features the gazebo at the Ralph Daley Park as it is decorated for the holidays. Cost of the ornament is still $10, but supplies are limited. Eighth Street or leave your name and phone number at the borough building and we will get the ornament to you. The half-mile trail is located next to Wyoming Area Catholic School and is full of frights and surprises at every turn. The second annual event is a fundraiser for the Exeter Park Hose Company.

    The Eco-Action Club will not meet on Monday, October 13, due to the school holiday. The club will resume their weekly meetings on Monday, October 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the borough building. Students recently viewed the movie Silent Spring based on the book of the same title written by Rachel Carson, an environmentalist and conversationalist who exposed the hazards of using DDT and other insecticides and pesticides.

    Well, we did it! You are now reading the writings of the brand new Mrs. James Patrick Galvin! We had a beautiful wedding ceremony at St. Mary’s Church, concelebrated by the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka and the Rev. Joseph G. Elston, and an equally beautiful reception at Colarusso’s LaPalazzo on Birney Avenue in Moosic. It was a perfect day!

    Boy Scout Troop 366, held a Court of Honor on Tuesday evening, September 23. Scoutmaster Mr. Douglas Kaminski awarded 50 merit badgesto the 15 boysin the Troop. Anthony Maslousky and his family was welcomed into the troop and severalof the boys advanced in rank. Scouts receiving their Tenderfoot Badges were Anthony Maslousky, Scott Socash, Matthew Minelli, Zachary Wisnewski and David Corby. Scouts advancing to1st Class wereAustin Shission and Brian Berti.     They are everywhere. You can see them on Wyoming Avenue, Luzerne Avenue and more prominently, Exeter Avenue. The crosswalk yield signs, or technically called channelizers, first appeared on Wyoming Avenue in front of Montgomery Avenue Elementary School last year. Since then, you can find a series of signs on the very narrow and busy Exeter Avenue as well as Luzerne Avenue.

    The Wyoming Area Kiwanis in conjunction with Pride Mobility Products Corporation completed their Second Annual fund raising bed race. More than 1000 people enjoyed a day of music, fun, food and games along with exciting bed races, while raising funds for Mckenna’s Place, a handicap accessible playground to be built in Exeter.
