16th annual Breakfast with Santa today until noon

The 16th annual Breakfast with Santa will take place this morning at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center Cafeteria from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Infants under 2 are free of charge.

Bobby Messina of Boy Scout Troop 302 is holding a fundraiser for his Eagle Scout project. Money is being raised to purchase a new flag pole for the Montgomery Avenue Middle School. The goal is approximately $3,500. Contributions can be sent to Scoutmaster Patrick Messina at 319 Salem Street, West Pittston, 18643. Please make all checks payable to Boy Scout Troop 302. Please put on the memo Flagpole. All donations are greatly appreciated.

This year’s breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee, juice, hot chocolate and milk. Santa Claus will be presented in a comfortable, child non-threatening environment, so your children can truly enjoy their visit with good old Saint Nick.

A Christmas Wonderland setting will greet the children and the adults, children will have to opportunity to make their own Christmas craft ornament and enjoy story telling and Christmas music sung by the K family members.

Running the event is the Wyoming Area Kiwanis Club, along with its sponsored Key Club and Builders.

Cherry Blossom

The West Pittston Cherry Blossom Committee will hold a reorganization meeting tomorrow, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception School Building.

Drama Fundraiser

The Wyoming Area Drama Club Parents are selling 18-inch Douglas Fir Christmas wreaths. For $10, you can purchase a voucher for a beautiful, fresh wreath.

Wreaths can then be picked-up at Ciampi’s Greenhouse, Exeter. Profits from this fund-raiser will be used to support Drama Club productions. Vouchers can be purchased from any Drama Club parent.

Third Sunday of Advent, December 13 - Taize service of song and prayer, 6 p.m.; Rummaging for God: praying backwards through the day, 6:45 p.m.

Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 20 - Christmas hymn sing, 3 p.m.; Cookie and coffee: prayers of fellowship, 3:45 p.m.

Christmas Caroling

West Pittston Parks, Recreation and Beautification Board is holding their annual Holiday gathering and Christmas Caroling on Saturday, December 12 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

Children will be doing crafts and decorating the tree prior to caroling. The group will then walk to the tree at the triangle near PNC Bank and sing Christmas Carols while enjoying cocoa and cookies. Santa will also make an appearance.

Senior Parents

There will be a Senior Class Parent’s meeting on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. Plans for the All Night Party will be discussed.

Library News

WINTERfest at the West Pittston Library runs from December 1 through February 27, 2010. Events are as follows:

Beginner Yoga Classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:45 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. at the old American Legion Building at 316 Linden St., $7.00 drop-in. Discover the benefits of yoga. This class is geared toward students who are new to yoga or are returning to yoga after some time away. The slower practice allows time for students to explore proper alignment and breath, with a strong focus on range of motion, balance and flexibility. Poses will be modified for student’s unique body type and physical ability.

Craft Night: Wednesdays: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Grab your knitting, crocheting, scrap booking, needlework, etc and enjoy an evening out hobnobbing with other craft enthusiasts. Coffee and tea will be provided, bring snacks if you want them.

Game Night: Thursdays: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Gather up the family or a group of friends and head over to the library for some game board fun. Choose from Clue, Clue, Jr., Sorry!, Monopoly Jr., Life, Pictureka! and others! Interested in a card game? No problem. Grab some friends and your competitive spirit and head over.

An Evening on The Polar Express? Monday, December 21: 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration required. For children 10 and under and dressed in pajamas. All aboard! Get your kids in their pajamas and enjoy a special evening Story Time at the West Pittston Library.

NYC Holiday Bus Trip: Thursday, December 10. (there are FIVE SEATS left) $25. Pack your hat, gloves and holiday spirit for a day trip to New York City. Enjoy a relaxing Martz bus ride to the city where you can join us for a historic church group tour, or choose from our self-guided tours for architect enthusiasts, museum go-ers and shoppers. Of course, you can always grab a map and do your own thing. We’ll pick you up at the Atlas Building on 4th and Pacific Ave. in West Pittston at 6:45 a.m and make sure you’re well fed with Sweet Caroline’s muffins and well caffeinated with Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. Departure from NYC will be at 6:30 p.m. The historic church group tour is limited to the first 12 people and the bus trip is limited to 55 people. Payment is due at signup; all proceeds benefit the West Pittston Library and the West Pittston Historical Society.

Christmas Caroling: Sunday, December 20 at 5:45 p.m. Dust off your vocal chords and get ready to sing your favorites like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Silent Night! We’ll meet at the library, distribute song books and head out to the streets of West Pittston to sing to our friends and neighbors around town. Hot chocolate will be served when we return to the library.

Library Monthly Book Club: Tuesday, January 5; Tuesday, February 2. Join in for their January discussion of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and their February discussion of The Liar’s Club by Mary Karr.

Post-Holiday Stress Buster: Wednesday, January 13, 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Let the students of McAnn School of Business and Technology rub away the stress of the holidays or give you a quick pick-me-up. $5 for a 10-minute chair massage. Proceeds benefit the West Pittston Library.

West Pittston Library Book Club First - Tuesday of Each month at 6:30 p.m.

Weekly Story Time - Every Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Weekly Family Game Night - Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The West Pittston Library’s State funding has been cut by 20-percent. The Friends of the West Pittston Library are currently working on several fundraisers to help the library.

Christmas Ornaments

The Wyoming Area Spanish Club is selling Christmas ornaments during lunch all this week. They are glass balls with the WA logo and class year on it. There are ornaments without the graduation year also available.

Recycling Note

Drop-off collection for recycling is every Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Public Works Facility, 505 Delaware Ave. Curbside recycling days are the first and third Thursdays. Recycling materials consist of commingled which includes glass, plastic and jars. Place these items together in recycling container. Please place newspapers in brown paper bags.

All businesses are mandated to recycling.
