Borough’s 100th anniversary committee to meet

The Old Forge School District’s 100th Anniversary Committee will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Elementary Library. The meeting is open to the public.

The 100th Anniversary Committee is seeking the names of all former students who served as class officers, and all class valedictorians and salutatorians from classes before 1961.

Anyone with information can contact the superintendent’s office at 457-6721.

The committee is also seeking “Graduate Family Trees.”

Forms can be found at the main office in the high school and online at www.ofsd.cc.

Graduate Family Tree forms will also be sent home with elementary students.

Budget Meeting

The Old Forge School Board will hold a Budget Committee meeting on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria.

LL registration

The Old Forge Lions Little League Program will hold registration for all baseball, softball and tee-ball players, ages 4 thru 16 on Feb. 13 from 12 – 4 p.m., and Feb. 14 from 12 – 2 p.m. Fees for the 2010 season are $45 for one player, $65 for two players from the same family, and $75 for three or more players from the same family.

A birth certificate is also required when signing up. Registrations will be taken in the lobby of Old Forge High School. Girls’ softball players in surrounding communities that do not have a Little League softball program may register to play too.

Roundball Club Trip

The Old Forge Boys Roundball Club will sponsor a bus trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City on Sunday, Feb. 28. The cost of the trip is $45 with a $25 bonus slot rebate.

Bus will leave the Old Forge High School parking lot at 7 a.m. and leave from the Showboat Casino at 5 p.m.

Dog Licenses Available

Old Forge Borough officials have announced that dog licenses will be available for residents on February 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the borough building.

St. Michael’s Pierogis

St. Michael’s Church is holding a pierogi sale in the church hall on February 9 from 2-5 p.m. Cost is $5 per dozen and orders must be placed by February 5. Call 562-3965, 586-2632 or 457-9280 to place an order.

Donors Needed

The Old Forge School District is seeking donors for 100th Anniversary banners that will be placed on telephone poles throughout the borough.

Design of the banners will feature either the OFHS crest or the Blue Devils logo, and the name of each donor.

Mardi Gras

The Prince of Peace Parish will hold a Mardi Gras celebration on February 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Arcaro & Genell’s Banquet Room in Old Forge.

Cost of the event is $25 and includes a hot and cold buffet; beer, wine and soda; and entertainment.

Easter Egg Hunt set

The Old Forge Lions Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 27 for children up to the age of 8.

The event will be held at Old Forge Veterans Memorial Stadium, and the Easter Bunny will be present to help children in collecting Easter Eggs.

Founder’s Day

The Old Forge Elementary PTA Founder’s Day meeting has been rescheduled.

The Meeting will be held in the High School Cafeteria on Monday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Debbie Dunstone, PA PTA Bylaws & Policy Chair.

The Founder’s Day meeting is to honor all past of the Presidents of the PTA and PTSA.

Refreshments are provided by the executive board.

Students Sought

State Rep. Jim Wansacz is currently seeking a worthy student from his legislative district for participation in the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative.

In December, the Pennsylvania House adopted a resolution (H.R. 565) to recognize Valley Forge as Pennsylvania’s official military college and create a legislative appointment program at the school.

For the academic year 2010-11, a student seeking admission into the LAI must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or a 21 on the ACT and an overall high school grade-point average of 2.5. Candidates should also exhibit involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership potential and be service-oriented.

Students chosen to attend Valley Forge through the LAI will receive an $8,500 scholarship under the program. Wansacz said the school will also assist in facilitating other financial aid options.

Wansacz said residents who would like to recommend a worthy student can contact his Old Forge Office at 570-451-3110. The deadline for recommendation submissions is Feb. 22.

OFSD School Calendar

There will be no school on Feb. 15 in observance of President’s Day, and just a half-day of school on Feb. 24.

Pinewood Derby

The Old Forge Cub Scout Pack 98 is conducting an Adult Pinewood Derby fundraiser on February 20.

Pre-race registration begins at 5:30 p.m. First race is at 7 p.m. Donation is $25 per car and includes an official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kit.

All proceeds will be used to fund events for the Cub Scouts. For more info or to register, contact Scout Master Harold Jones at 562-2012.
