DUPONT
Dupont lost one of their more prominent citizens this past week. George Legezdh passed away on Sunday, November 6. George served as Mayor, Councilman, Chief of Police and he was a life member of AmVets Post 189 serving as Commander, adjutant and finance officer and also a life member of VFW Post 4909 and American Legion Post 657.
George was a well known supporter of veterans’ rights. He always offered his help, especially with regard to: placing flags on veterans’ final resting place, or hosting parties and activities for patients at Veterans Hospitals, preparing services for the annual Memorial Day Parade and leading a group of AmVets as a “Honor Guard” which provided military honors for hundred of veterans funerals. His passionate dedication to public service was his life and his service to this community and to the veterans will be truly missed. The community had the opportunity to pay their finals respects to Mr. Legezdh on the most appropriate day: “Veterans Day”.
The Dupont Lions annual and only fundraiser of the year is now underway. Lottery tickets are now on sale for $10 and will run for five weeks beginning November 23 to December 26. $100 will be awarded on weekday numbers and $500 on Saturday’s number.
Proceeds from the lottery goes to support the Lions Club annual Easter Egg Hunt, which serves over 400 children with prizes ranging from Easter candy baskets to bicycles.

Today, Sunday, November 15 the Lions Club will “Light Up Your Christmas” with the placing of the new snowflake lights. The organization will be adding a few more snowflakes this year. If your organization would like to sponsor a snowflake at a cost of $250 or any amount to help defray the cost can do so by contacting, Lion Tony Draus, Dan Lello, Chris Kal or Ken Shambe.
Everyone is cordially invited to attend Holy Mother of Sorrows and Sacred Heart of Jesus community Thanksgiving Prayer Service at Holy Mother of Sorrows Church, Wyoming Ave. on Saturday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. Both parish choirs will join voices in praise and thanksgiving. Father Dawid will lead the services and he homilist for the service will be Father Verespy. During the service a collection will be taken to benefit the Pittston Food Bank. Following the prayer service a social will be held at the Holy Mother of Sorrows Hall. Everyone is welcome.
There is still time to make your reservation for this year annual Children’s Christmas Party sponsored by Dupont Borough. The annual event will be held on Saturday, December 19th at the VFW Post 4909 on Main Street from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please call the municipal office at 655-6216 with the child’s name, age, address and number of people attending. Deadline for reservations is Monday, November 30.
The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions will be held on Tuesday, November 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Holy Mother of Sorrows Church hall on Wyoming Ave. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible. There will be no turkeys distributed at this time. Anyone interested in applying for a turkey dinner can do so through the Commission on Economic Opportunity by calling one of the following numbers to register: 825-0968; 825-0268 or 208-7017.
If you didn’t have an opportunity to attend the Property Owners informational meeting held on Nov. 4, brochures from the Bureau of Aging presentation are available at the borough office during regular business hours. Brochures Serves include: Nursing Home Transition; Full and Part Time Employment available to seniors age 55 or older within income guidelines; casework services; choices in long term living services, nutrition services to name a few. You can reach the AAA Administrative office at 822-1158. LLIHEAP applications are available at the borough office or by calling the County Assistance Office at 826-2100.

Holy Mother of Sorrows and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church have joined efforts in sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive in each of the parishes this weekend for the Food Pantry of Greater Pittston. Containers will be placed in the back of each church’s vestibule which will be open only during church services. If you wish you make a donation you can drop off your contribution anytime on the back porches of each parish rectory. Items requested are: popular cereals, cans of carrots, green beans, potatoes and corn: cans of chicken noodle, vegetable, beef noodle pea and potato soups; boxes of jell-o, cake mixes, puddings and containers of icing.
The Polish American Citizens Club monthly meeting scheduled for today, Sunday, November 15 has been cancelled.
Dupont Borough Tax Collector, Bill Elko reminds residents that face value for the 2009 School taxes will end on Monday; November 23rd. Penalty value will be collected from November 24th to December 15th. Office hours are Monday only from 2 to 4 or by appointment. The tax books for 2009 will close on Tuesday, December 15.
The Eco-Action Club meets every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the municipal building. On the first and second Tuesdays of the month the club will for one hour and on the third and fourth Tuesdays the club will meet for an hour and a half to two hours so that club members can work on activities. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a proposal to install a traffic signal on Route 315 in Dupont. The project is located at the intersection of Lackawanna Ave and Route 315. During construction there will be partial lane closures on Route 315 and minor lanes shifts on Route 2065, Main Street. Bids for the project are scheduled for April 15th, 2010. If you have not addressed your concerns at monthly council you can do so by contacting PennDOT Project Manager Alison Pevec at 963-4022 by November 17.
The Senior Citizens Outreach Group of Sacred Heart will meet on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the rectory. New members are always welcome.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Przbytek-Kudlas VFW Post 4909, Dupont will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the post home. The Ladies Auxiliary District 11 President, Debra Wojciechowicz will be at this meeting. The Christmas Party will follow at Colarusso’s Caf�, Main St., Avoca at 7:00 p.m. This year the club is collecting a $5 donation per attending members for a charity in lieu of the grab bag. Anyone planning to attend please contact President Peggy Best at 562-0956 by November 24.
Dupont Property Owners Association will hold election of officers for 2010 at the next meeting on Tuesday, December 1. Please contact Paula DeMark at 878-0168 with nominations or intentions to run for office. State Trooper Martin Connors will also speak at this meeting regarding Megan’s Law and how to protect our children from known sexual offenders.
