DURYEA
Calling all of the ghosts and goblins of Duryea. If you’re looking for a night of frightful free fun, then the Brick United Methodist Church’s annual Halloween party is the event for you.
On Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., the Brick United Methodist Church will sponsor a Halloween costume party for children and adults in the church hall, which is located in the lower level of the church, 935 Foote Ave. Just one of the many fun-filled activities for the night includes a night-time cemetery walk through the Marcy Cemetery, which is located behind the church. Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the best Halloween cemetery walks in the Greater Pittston area.
As a child, I attended this annual Duryea event many times and always had a great time. This truly one Duryea event you will not want to miss!
A special thank you is extended to the Duryea Lions Club for donating 200 illuminated trick-or-treat bags to the students of Holy Rosary School.
And in other Lions Club news … the Duryea Lions Club recently presented the following groups with certificates of appreciation for selling the club’s corn brooms: Duryea Borough Manager Lois Morreale and the Duryea Borough Council, Rehoski’s Market, and My Sister’s Kitchen restaurant.
American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 Ladies Auxiliary is asking all members with auxiliary shirts to please return them to the post home, 329 Main St., as soon as possible. The shirts are inscribed incorrectly.
There will be a breakfast rally today for Bruce Knick, candidate for Pittston Area school director, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Dupont V.F.W., Main Street, Dupont. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will have an executive session meeting Monday, Oct. 19 at 6:45 p.m. in the sewer authority office for board members only. The Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will have its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Following the regular meeting, the board members will meet to work on the 2010 budget. The public is invited to attend.
The Confraternity of Christian Women of Holy Rosary Church will have a covered dish dinner Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in the church hall, 127 Stephenson St., in honor of the Rev. Charles Rokosz’s birthday. Please contact Helen Rava or Irene DeAngelo to make a reservation and to coordinate what covered dish you will bring to the dinner.
Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375 will have pack night Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Hall, Stephenson Street.
The Area Agency on Aging “Center Without Walls” program will present a healthy eating program for individuals with diabetes and heart problems Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The guest speaker will be Bobbie Sendick who is the nutrition manager for all Area Agency on Aging programs in Luzerne and Wyoming counties. Senior citizens and caregivers of elderly people are invited to attend this free event. Refreshments will be served.
The Duryea Lions Club will meet Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at My Sister’s Kitchen restaurant, 421 Main St.
Duryea Boy Scout Troop 285 will embark on a five-mile backpacking trip followed by an overnight camp out October 24-25 on the Pinchot Trail. For more information on how your son can join in the fun, please call Ann Edwards at 457-8402.
The United Baptist Church will have a bake sale Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 125 Church St., Taylor. Just a few of the sale items include fruit squares, pumpkin roll, and zucchini bread. All proceeds will benefit the food pantry at the Moosic United Methodist Church, which is open to the public.
The parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus’ and St. Joseph’s Churches will have their fall and Christmas craft and gift fair Sunday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Hall, Stephenson Street. There will be a large variety of crafts and gifts featuring two floors of vendors, baked goods, a Chinese Auction, raffles, and food. Admission and parking are free. Interested vendors may call 883-9814 or 587-1214 for information. The public is invited to attend.

The Duryea Wildcats will have a nomination of new board members meeting Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Wildcats field, rear Foote Avenue. The candidates will be voted for Thursday, Nov. 12.
The Crossin Towers Friendly Social Club will have a wimpie and hot dog luncheon Thursday, Nov. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the community room of Frank P. Crossin Towers, 500 Brown St. The menu includes your choice of a wimpie or a hot dog, potato chips, dessert, and a beverage. The lunches are $3.50 each. Takeouts will be available too. The public is invited to attend. The chairperson for this event is Marie Chromey, and the co-chairperson is Paul Echalk.

The ladies of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will have a takeout stuffed cabbage sale Friday, Nov. 13 from 3-6 p.m. in the lower level of the church, 200 Stephenson St. The stuffed cabbages are $1.50 each. To place an order, please call Delores Biscontini at 457-9381 or Mary Jayne Milkanin at 457-6414. Please note a limited amount of cabbages will be made. Byron Wescott is the parish chairman.
The annual Duryea Wildcats Football and Cheerleading banquet is Sunday, Dec. 6 at the Best Western Genetti Hotel and Convention Center, Wilkes-Barre. Tickets are $22 for adults and $16 for children 10 years old and younger. Wildcat football players and cheerleaders will be admitted for free. Please note tickets will not be sold at the door. For ticket information, please call Bonnie at 451-2689 or visit the stand at the Wildcats’ field during any Sunday home game throughout October. Please note if any cheerleader or football player has not completed his or her yearly fundraiser, it will need to be paid before they can purchase tickets.
Duryea bingo takes place every Monday at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed $1,000 jackpot every week.
