The Inaugural Wyoming Oktoberfest will take place this coming Saturday, October 10 from 2-10 p.m. at Flack Field (rain date is Sunday, October 11).
There will be community contests such as who can build the best pumpkin chunkin, best carved pumpkin, and best pumpkin recipe contest. There will be pony rides, moon bounce, games, delicious food and liquid refreshments as well as live entertainment by the popular country band, The Jeanne Zano Band (Jeanne is formerly of Flaxy Morgan) from 6-10 pm.
Interested vendors/sponsors should contact John Bolin at 693-1944 after 5 pm. Anyone who can volunteer the day of the event to help, please contact Jeanne Wisnewski at 905-1946.
Wyoming Oktoberfest Pumpkin Recipe Contest: Entry forms for the contest are located at the Wyoming Library, Gerrity’s Supermarket, Wyoming Ave, and Flowers by Lucille on 167 E 8th St, Wyoming. You may drop off your entries at Flowers by Lucille or simply send $5 with your name, address and phone number to Wyoming Recreation Board Pumpkin Recipe Contest, 277 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, PA 18644. If using a check, please make it out to Wyoming Recreation Board. All food entered for the contest must have a "pumpkin" ingredient and be delivered to Flack Field on October 10 by 3 p.m. (rain date is Sunday, Oct. 11). Judging will take place at 4 p.m.
Best Decorated Scarecrow Contest: Wyoming business owners - please display your scarecrows outside your storefront this week for all the town to see and bring it for judging to Flack Field on October 10, preferably at 1:30pm but no later than 5pm.Winners will be announced at 6 p.m.
Jack-O-Lantern Contest: If participating in the contest, please bring your jack-o-lantern to Flack Field on October 10, preferably at1:30 p.m. but no later than 6 p.m. The earlier you bring your pumpkin, the better because there will be canisters set up for each jack-o-lantern and the one who receives the most money will be the winner. All proceeds will go to the Wyoming Recreation Board and voters may contribute any amount of money. There is no minimum amount required.
Pumpkin Chunkin Contest -If you are entering, please have your pumpkin chunkin machine at Flack Field by 2 p.m. The launches will begin at 3 p.m.
The Wyoming -West Wyoming Seniors will meet Tuesday, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows meeting hall, with Frank Perfinski presiding. Hosting are Burt Greco, Mary Matani and Stella Antos. Guest speaker will be Eileen Cipriani. Her topic will be on the Abrahams Creek Watershed Association.
September birthdays were acknowledged and they are Stella Antos, Vicky Banko, Ruth Zalepa and Frank Perfinski.
The Halloween Social will be held on the October 20 meeting with a special menu. The committee consisting of Joe Shymanski, Genny Labathy, Marion Pocceschi and Donna Pocceschi have made their final arrangements. The annual Christmas dinner will be on December 1. More details later. There will be refreshments, Bingo will be played and raffle will be held. New members are welcome and plenty of parking is available.
Wyoming Area Boys Basketball Parents Association will meet on Sunday, October 11 at 6 p.m. in the West Pittston Borough Building. All parents of player in grades 7th through 12th are urged to attend. Plans for the upcoming season, plus meet the Warriors are on the agenda.
The Wyoming/ West Wyoming Little League Board will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the West Wyoming Town Hall. The 2009-2010 board will be established at this meeting.
The Wyoming Fire Department No. 1 will be having a community event for Fire Safety Awareness on Saturday October 10, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Flack Field in conjunction with the Oktoberfest. There will be handouts and equipment displays.
West Wyoming Hose Co # 2 will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday October 5 at Company Headquarters on Stites Street in the Borough. All members are urged to attend. Anyone age 14 and older interested in learning more about the Fire Service is welcome to come and meet with our officers to explore the opportunity. The Relief Association will follow immediately after the conclusion of the regular meeting.
West Wyoming Hose Co #2 wishes to thank their neighbors for their past support and announce that their Annual Fund Drive is now underway. You should have received your mail solicitation by now, and they again are asking you to help them continue to provide emergency services to you 24 hrs a day, each and every day of the year. Your professionally trained, all volunteer, fire/rescue service is proud to answer your calls for help in all types of emergencies, from fire to vehicle accidents, and from flooding to gas leaks.
They will happily get out of a warm bed at 2 in the morning to go out in bitter weather conditions in order to aid you in your time of need.
They gladly sacrifice time that could be spent with their families to train and prepare themselves to safely handle dangerous situations so you can spend more time with your families. But, they deeply need your help at this time of the year. Please send your monetary gift in as soon as possible. If you did not receive their request in the mail please call us at 287-1182 and they will send you one or they will come to you personally to collect your donation.
The Wyoming Area Drama Club Parents will be meeting this Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m. at the Secondary Center. Plans will be finalized for the Drama Club’s ‘Night of Fright’ Halloween production which will be held Saturday, October 24. All parents of Drama Club members are encouraged to attend.
Wyoming Area Wrestling Parents Association will be holding its first meeting for the 2009/10 season on Thursday, October 5 at the High School. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. All wrestling parents are urged to attend. (K-12th) Anyone having any questions is please asked to contact JoAnne @ 299-7056.
The Police Station is now under construction and the Borough Office as well as the Tax Collector has now moved to the Midway Shopping Center. The office is located is located to the right of Price Chopper. This is also the temporary location of the police station. Telephone numbers are the same. Face Value is now in effect and the Tax Office hours are Monday 9 to 10:30 a.m. The Borough Office hours have not changed and are open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any questions, please call 693-0291 and Cheryl DiGiacomo, Borough Manager will be more than glad to help.
