Indoor Fall Festival next weekend at Holy Rosary

Summer might be over, but that doesn’t mean the annual church festivals have ended!

Holy Rosary Church will have its 16th annual indoor fall festival Friday, Oct. 9 from 4-10 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 10 from 5-9 p.m. in the lower church hall and the Holy Rosary School gymnasium and cafeteria, 125-127 Stephenson St.

The festival features homemade ethnic foods, home canned goods, a large bake sale, a variety of chance stands, beautiful baskets, kids games, a chance of winning two LCD TVs, and cash prizes from $100 to $1,000.

The public is invited to attend.

Legion Officers

Congratulations to the following men who were installed as officers for the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585: Edward Matt, commander; Matthew Wasik, senior vice commander; John Pliska, junior vice commander, Paul Dehaba, adjutant; Frank Cashmere, treasurer; Joseph Galuska, service officer; Adam Kilyanek, chaplain; and Frank Tokash, sergeant at arms.

Legion Auxiliary

The Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 Ladies Auxiliary is asking all members with auxiliary shirts to please return them to the post home, 329 Main St., as soon as possible. The shirts are inscribed incorrectly.

Fundraiser Today

The community is invited to “Fun, Food, and Music for Justin” today from 1-7 p.m. at Litzy’s Lounge, 614 York Ave. The event will raise funds for 6-year-old Avoca resident Justin Burns, son of Maria (Houston) Burns, who was born with Down syndrome and recently diagnosed with leukemia. The funds will be used to help defray the medical and travel expenses associated with his treatment.

During the event, patrons will enjoy a full buffet of numerous types of food as well as unlimited draft beer and soda the entire day for just $20. While attendees are satisfying their taste buds, they will also enjoy listening to the classic rock stylings of Billy Jumper and friends. There will also be a raffle and a Chinese auction. Just a few of the prizes include a two-night stay at Martinville Streamside Cottages in the Poconos November 6-7 which is valued at $800; a Dufferin pool cue valued at $280; and a Biker pool cue case valued at $150. Raffle tickets are $5 each.

Sewer Bills

The Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will mail the October sewer bills this week. If you do not receive a bill, please call the office at 457-0122. Office hours for October and November are Monday through Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m. Please note the office will be closed October 12 and November 3 and 11.

Wildcats Nominations

The Duryea Wildcats will have a nomination of new board members Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Wildcats’ field, rear Foote Avenue.

UM Women

The United Methodist Women of the Wilkes-Barre District will have their fall meeting Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Larksville United Methodist Church.

Legion Meeting

The members of the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 will meet Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. at the post home, 329 Main St. The board of directors meeting will take place immediately following the members’ meeting.

Little League

The Duryea Little League will have its monthly meeting Sunday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Duryea Little League Field, rear Foote Avenue. During this meeting, second nominations for officers will be accepted. Voting for the officers will be held at the November meeting.

AL Auxiliary

The Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 Ladies Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the post home, 329 Main St. All members are urged to attend.

The auxiliary would also like to remind families of auxiliary members to please update any membership statuses by calling the post at 457-4242 or mailing a note to the post home at 329 Main St., Duryea PA 18642.

HR Anniversary

The Holy Rosary School 75th Anniversary Committee will meet Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary School cafeteria, 125 Stephenson St. Anyone who is interested in joining the committee is encouraged to attend.

Covered Dish

The Confraternity of Christian Women of Holy Rosary Church will have a covered dish dinner Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in the church hall, 127 Stephenson St., in honor of the Rev. Charles Rokosz’s birthday. Please contact Helen Rava or Irene DeAngelo to make a reservation and to coordinate what covered dish you will bring to the dinner.

Bake Sale

The United Baptist Church will have a bake sale Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 125 Church St., Taylor. Just a few of the sale items include fruit squares, pumpkin roll, and zucchini bread. All proceeds will benefit the food pantry at the Moosic United Methodist Church, which is open to the public.

Craft Fair

The parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus’ and St. Joseph’s Churches will have their fall and Christmas craft and gift fair Sunday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Hall, Stephenson Street. There will be a large variety of crafts and gifts featuring two floors of vendors, baked goods, a Chinese Auction, raffles, and food. Admission and parking are free. Interested vendors may call 883-9814 or 587-1214 for information. The public is invited to attend.

Wildcats Banquet

The annual Duryea Wildcats Football and Cheerleading banquet is Sunday, Dec. 6 at the Best Western Genetti Hotel and Convention Center, Wilkes-Barre. Tickets are $22 for adults and $16 for children 10 years old and younger. Wildcat football players and cheerleaders will be admitted for free. Please note tickets will not be sold at the door. For ticket information, please call Bonnie at 451-2689 or visit the stand at the Wildcats’ field during any Sunday home game throughout October. Please note if any cheerleader or football player has not completed his or her yearly fundraiser, it will need to be paid before they can purchase tickets.

Duryea Bingo

Duryea bingo takes place every Monday at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed $1,000 jackpot every week.

Tire Recycling

In conjunction with the free used tire collection sponsored by Luzerne County, the Duryea Borough Street Department will collect two tires for free from each Duryea household. Anyone who has more than two tires to be picked up may advise the borough office of their need, and, if room is available, those individuals with additional tires will be contacted. Please note each municipality has a collection limit of 250 tires.

The types of tires eligible for this collection include automobile, motorcycle, pick-up, and SUV. All tires must be removed from rims, free of liquids and heavy mud, and cannot be cut. To register for a tire pick up, please call the borough office at 655-2829. Residents can also take their tires to the free tire collection day Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hanover Area Junior Senior High School, 1600 Sans Souci Parkway, Hanover Twp.
