Hey parents! Did you know? Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents “summer reading loss.”
Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don’t “catch up” in fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.
To help ensure your children don’t suffer from “summer reading loss,” sign them up for the Summer Reading Program at the West Pittston Library! The SRP is designed to foster literacy and develop a relationship between children and their local library. This year’s theme is “Be Creative @ Your Library” and our slogan is “Imagine, Create, Participate!”
We have a variety of activities and crafts planned that touch on a range of topics including rhythm, acting, visual arts and dance including a dance party, an outdoor movie and an art show.
Signs-ups begin on Friday and Saturday June 19 and 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. during the annual Book & Bake Sale and continue throughout the summer.
Bring your child during our kickoff weekend and enjoy our extended hours and special programs. Don’t forget to check out a few books and purchase a West Pittston Library tote bag while you’re there! All proceeds from the tote bag fundraiser benefit children’s programs at the library.
Special Programs: Friday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m. – Library Magic Show and Balloon Animals. Saturday, June 20 at 9:00 a.m. – Ronald McDonald Magic Show.
