Methodist Women assembling health kits for Haiti

As all of have seen and read in numerous media reports, the people of Haiti are in desperate need of assistance. Many people have responded to their cry for help and many still continue to do so every day. If you would like to help, you can still with a special project that is underway right here in Duryea.

The Brick United Methodist Women’s group is currently assembling health kits for Haiti. The ladies are seeking the following items: 15 inches by 25 inches hand towels up to 17 inches by 27 inches, wash cloths, wide toothed combs (large and sturdy, not pocket sized), finger nail clippers, nail files (no emery boards), bath size bars of soap (3 ounces or larger), toothbrushes, adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages, and one-gallon resealable plastic sandwich bags. Donations can be left in either the vestibule of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., or the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St., Avoca.

Monetary gifts will also be accepted. Checks can be made payable to Mission Central.

Happy birthday to Rita Olecki who will celebrate her special day Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Happy birthday to Elaine Slusark who will celebrate her 40th birthday Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Happy birthday to Joan Pradel who will celebrate her special day Saturday, Feb. 13.

Garbage Stickers

Duryea residents are reminded the Duryea Borough 2010 garbage stickers were due February 1. Stickers can still be purchased Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. Stickers can also be purchased Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. at the municipal building. Prices of the garbage stickers, including a $10 late fee, are one bag – $90; two bags – $145; three bags – $185; and four bags – $225. Garbage will not be collected from any household that does not have a garbage sticker displayed.

Medals for Scouts

Several members of Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375 will receive their religious medals at the Scout Sunday Service today at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson St.

‘Souper Bowl’

The Brick United Methodist Women will have a “Souper Bowl Sunday” canned soup drive today. The public is encouraged to bring a can of soup to the 9:45 a.m. service that day. Donations may be left in the rear of the church or in the side sanctuary. All proceeds will benefit the Moosic United Methodist Church food pantry, which benefits residents of Duryea, Avoca, Moosic, Old Forge, and Taylor.

Legion Auxiliary

The Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 Ladies Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the post home, 329 Main St.

The auxiliary would also like to remind families of auxiliary members to please update any membership statuses by calling the post at 457-4242 or mailing a note to the post home at 329 Main St., Duryea PA 18642.

Council Meeting

The Duryea Borough Council will have their monthly work session and meeting Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The public is invited to attend.

HR Anniversary

The Holy Rosary School 75th Anniversary Committee will meet Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary School cafeteria, 125 Stephenson St., to discuss upcoming anniversary activities. The public is invited to attend.

Wildcats Meeting

The Duryea Wildcats will have their monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. Please note this is both a regular and bi-law meeting.

Wimpie Luncheon

The Crossin Towers Friendly Social Club will have a wimpie and hot dog luncheon Thursday, Feb. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the community room of Frank P. Crossin Towers, 500 Brown St. The menu includes your choice of a wimpie or a hot dog, potato chips, dessert, and coffee or iced tea. The lunches are $3.50 each. Takeouts will be available too. The public is invited to attend. The chairpersons for this event are Peggy Murphy and Shirley Milazzo.

Sewer Authority

The Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will have a special meeting Thursday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The meeting agenda includes completing the reorganization for 2010, hiring a new employee for the sewer authority’s office, and discussing a sewer connection problem. The public is invited to attend.

Ash Wednesday

Sacred Heart of Jesus/St. Joseph’s Churches will have their annual Ash Wednesday food sale February 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Hall, 529 Stephenson St. The items for sale include ethnic foods, potato pancakes, pierogi, haluski, pizza, and their famous homemade red clam chowder as well as vegetarian vegetable and seafood bisque soups.

Germania Breakfast

The Germania Hose Company will have its annual all you can eat breakfast Sunday, Feb. 21 from 7 a.m. to noon at the hose company, 430 Foote Ave. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children.

Derby Day

Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375 will celebrate Derby Day Sunday, Feb. 21 at Sacred Heart Hall, Stephenson Street. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. followed by the Pinewood Derby races and Raingutter Regatta model boat races. Refreshments will be available.

Avoca AOH

The Avoca A.O.H. will have an important meeting Thursday, Feb. 25 at the West Side Social Club, 700 McAlpine St., Avoca. Plans for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick dinner, and posting the Irish banners on Main and McAlpine Streets in Avoca will be discussed at this time. All members are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Lenten Food Sale

Sacred Heart of Jesus/St. Joseph’s Churches will have their annual Lenten food sale Friday, March 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Hall, Stephenson Street. The items for sale include pierogi, haluski, pizza, their famous homemade red clam chowder, and baked goods. Takeouts will be available too.

Duryea Bingo

Duryea bingo takes place every Monday at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed $1,000 jackpot every week.

Al-Anon Meetings

Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. Anyone who has been impacted by someone else’s drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship.
