OLD FORGE
The Old Forge Coal Mine Group will hold its regular bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Eagle McClure Hose Co Hall.
A large display of mining equipment, photos and books in addition to information contained in the Anthracite Archives will be available. Reports on current and up coming projects will be discussed. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is invited to come out and be a part of history.
The Diamond Devils Softball Club, in conjunction with the Old Forge varsity baseball, softball and golf teams will host the Old Forge Open on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Pine Hills Golf Club in Taylor. The tournament is captain-and-crew format with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.
Cost of the tournament is $90 per person or $360 per foursome, and includes dinner, prizes, scats and a tournament hoodie. Dinner will follow at St. George’s Church Hall. All proceeds will benefit the baseball, softball and golf programs.

The Old Forge School District is seeking the oldest living graduates of Old Forge High to take part in Homecoming Festivities on October 16 when the Blue Devils host Carbondale. Graduates will be honored during pre-game ceremonies.
Alumni are asked to contact Athletic Director Debbie Pepsin at 457-6721 if interested in participating.
The Miles Street Community Park will close at 7 p.m., effective immediately, for the remainder of the season. Borough council decided to make the change due to recent vandalism.
The Old Forge Community Action Committee expects demand for this year’s borough real estate tax rebates to help the program surpass $200,000 in rebates issued since 2005.
The Committee, which works with Alliance Landfill to support programs and projects that benefit Old Forge residents, will accept this year’s rebate applications beginning September 25. Applications will be accepted through October 30.
The program will offer Old Forge Borough real estate tax rebates of up to $100 to owner-occupants of Old Forge homes. The homeowner-occupants must be 55 years old or older to qualify.
OFCAC’s 2008 rebate program issued more than $60,000 in rebates to more than 600 Old Forge owner-occupants. The program processed more than $40,000 in 2007 and 2006 and $10,000 in rebates in its first year, 2005. Residents can mail copies of their driver’s license, blue “2009 Old Forge Boro” tax bill, and phone number to the committee at PO Box 274, Taylor 18517. Committee members will accept application information in-person on October 5, 7 and 19 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the senior citizens center on the lower level of the Old Forge Borough Building. The rebates will take four to six weeks to process. Applications received after October 30 will not be accepted.
The Old Forge Elementary PTA will host its annual book fair, themed “Destination,” this week from Monday-Friday in the library during the school day. Elementary family and friends are welcome on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 3-6 p.m., and are asked to park and enter at the high school main entrance.
Old Forge Borough Recreation Board will meet October 7 at 7 p.m. at the Old Forge Community Park.
Teachers and administrators form Old Forge Elementary will serve up fries and drinks at McDonald’s Restaurant in Old Forge on Wednesday, October 7, from 5 - 8 p.m. as part of McTeachers Night. This one night fund raiser will be held to benefit the Students of Old Forge Elementary and their Devil Pride Program.
Old Forge Elementary will receive a portion of the sales during that time teachers and administrators will “work” at the McDonald’s Restaurant greeting customers, working the registers, serving drinks and in some cases assist with food preparation such as making French fries.
In addition to the food sales, Ronald McDonald will be on hand to perform for the children in attendance at the event and a coloring contest will be conducted. Students are asked to return their coloring sheets to McDonald’s during this same time. The homeroom with the most number of entries returned will be treated to lunch compliments of McDonald’s Restaurant. A basket raffle will also be held to further generate money for the Devil Pride Program.
The Old Forge Knight of Columbus will host its annual pasta and polenta on the board dinner on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Cost of the dinner is $8 for adults and $4 for children.
The Old Forge Elementary PTA will meet on Oct. 19 at p.m. in the elementary cafeteria. The PTA meets the third Monday of every month. For more information, contact PTA President Amanda Schuback at 451-3560
