DURYEA: Spring raffle and bake sale planned at Holy Rosary

The Christian Women of Holy Rosary will have their monthly meeting Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. in the church hall, 127 Stephenson St. At this meeting, final plans for the upcoming raffle and spring bake sale, which is slated for April 18 and 19, will be discussed.

Debbie Bardar and Debbie Orner are the hostesses for this meeting.

Helen Rava is the president, and the Rev. Charles Rokosz is the moderator. New members are welcome.

Happy birthday to Mary Ann Masalonis who will celebrate her special day Saturday, March 14.

Big Winners

Congratulations to the following Pinewood Derby and Rain Gutter Regatta winners from Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375: Pinewood Derby winners: Brandon Houghtlin, Scott Corti, Michael Elko, and Michael Lojewski; Rain Gutter Regatta winners: Anthony Zimmerman, Scott Corti, Brandon Mickavicz, and Michael Renna. These Scouts will compete at the 2 Mt. District Derby Day in April along with Duryea Tiger Cub A.J. Gorto.

Stations of the Cross

The public is invited to pray the Stations of the Cross Fridays at 7 p.m. during Lent at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St., and at Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson St.

Avoca AOH

The members of the Avoca A.O.H. will attend the 11 a.m. Mass today at St. Mary’s Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca. All members should meet outside of the church at 10:40 a.m. Following Mass, any A.O.H. member who wants to participate in the Wilkes-Barre St. Patrick’s Day parade should meet at the West Side Social Club for transportation to and from the parade courtesy of Parrish Limousine.

Polish Alliance

Duryea Polish National Alliance Lodge 187 will meet today at 1 p.m. at the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St. Dues will be collected until 1:30 p.m.

Pack Night

Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375 will have pack night Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Hall, Stephenson Street. Tiger Cub Den 2 will host the meeting, which is themed “when I grow up.” During the meeting, hoagie orders will be accepted and plans will be finalized for the Blue and Gold Banquet in April.

Senior Outreach

The Area Agency on Aging for Luzerne and Wyoming Counties is establishing a monthly outreach program in Duryea for senior citizens and for individuals who take care of an elderly person. The first meeting is Wednesday, March 18 from 1-3 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The program will inform individuals about care giving, aging services, care options, nursing homes versus assisted living facilities, gambling, elder law, power of attorney, living wills, and home safety.

Lions Club

The Duryea Lions Club will meet Wednesday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at My Sister’s Kitchen, 421 Main St.

Lenten Services

Several Protestant churches in Duryea, Avoca, and Moosic will have joint weekly Lenten services Wednesdays at 7 p.m. throughout Lent. This year’s theme is “They Heard Him Gladly.” The next service is March 18 at the Moosic Assembly of God Church where the Rev. Rich Rock, pastor of St. John’s Primitive Methodist Church, Avoca, will speak. The public is invited to attend.

Excelsior Meeting

Members of the Excelsior Hose Co. No. 2 will meet Thursday, March 19 to review the returns for their upcoming night at the races. President Frank Groblewski will preside over the meeting.

Night at the Races

The family and friends of 1st Lt. Jeffrey F. DePrimo will have a night at the races Saturday, March 21 in the Seton Catholic School Auditorium, William Street.Racing forms can be obtained by calling Ron Gitkos at 654-2261 or 466-1232.

Court of Honor

Duryea Boy Scout Troop 285 will have their Court of Honor spaghetti dinner Thursday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St. During this event, the boys will receive new positions of responsibilities; merit badges; camp paperwork for their summer trip to Goose Pond in August; and welcome two Webelos II scouts from Cub Scout Pack 375.

Excelsior Races

The Excelsior Hose Co. No. 2 will have a night at the races Saturday, March 28 at the Germania Hose Co., 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the races begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 which includes food and beverages the entire night as well as a horse. Horses can also be purchased separately for $10 each. The sponsor of the winning horse will win $50 and does not need to be present to win. All proceeds will assist Excelsior Hose Co. in making payments on their fire truck.

Speaking of the Excelsior night at the races, all members of the Excelsior Hose Co. are reminded to return any racing forms they have obtained by March 18.

Craft, Gift Fair

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church/St. Joseph Churches will have its spring craft and gift fair Sunday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Sacred Heart Hall, Stephenson Street.

 

Wildcats Sign-ups

The Duryea Wildcats will have an early sign up session Wednesday, April 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. Please note all participants must be at least 5 on or before August 1 to participate and submit their birth certificate, a photo, and medical clearance from a doctor. In addition to these requirements, all new cheerleaders and football players must submit a proof of residency. For more information please call Coach Bob “Poppy” Erfman at 457-8566.

In other Wildcats news, any cheerleader or football player who has not returned his or her uniform from last season needs to bring it to the early sign up session. Please place the uniform in a bag with the child’s name and team on it. If you have any questions please contact your child’s coach or Coach Erfman.

Germania Bingo

Duryea bingo takes place every Monday at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed $1,000 jackpot every week! Free bus transportation is available by calling 457-3062 to make a reservation for pick-up.
