It looks like there are two special occasions in Duryea to celebrate!
Tuesday, October 7 the Duryea Democrats are hosting a Debate Party at the VFW on Stephenson Street, Duryea. The public is invited free of charge and encouraged to participate, refreshments will be served. An informational session will start at 7:30 p.m. with the debate set to start at 9 p.m. Pictured are some of the primary organizers of the event, left to right. Absentee ballots will be available at the debate as well from Frank Brosso. A reminder for anyone wanting to participate in the November election the deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 6. The applications must be postmarked by midnight. The first is Holy Rosary Church’s 15th annual Fall Festival which will take place Friday, Oct. 10, from 4-10 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 11, from 5-9 p.m. in the lower church hall as well as the school gymnasium and cafeteria, 125-127 Stephenson St. The festival will feature homemade ethnic foods, homemade canned goods and baked goods, a variety of chance stands, beautiful baskets, kid’s games, instant bingo, cash bingo, and a giant cash raffle with prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000! It is truly a great Duryea event you will not want to miss.
Also, on Saturday, Oct. 11, I am attending an event that I will definitely not miss … my own wedding!
As many of you know, my fianc�, Jim Galvin Jr. of Avoca, and I will be united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony this Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Avoca, by the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka, our pastor and friend. If you get the chance, stop by the church to see us. If not, please continue to keep us and our families in your prayers that we may continue to grow as a couple and become reflections of Christ’s love to one another.
While we’re on the subject of weddings … congratulations to Holly Moran, daughter of Carla and Ronnie Moran, who was united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony to Bobby Zbysheski on Saturday, Sept. 27 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. Holly is also the granddaughter of Ruth Kern. They had a beautiful wedding and reception that was attended by many Greater Pittston residents.
Happy birthday to Steve Saneski the “super soup maker” of Duryea.
The Duryea Borough Sewer Authority October bills have been sent. If you do not receive a bill by October 6, please call the office at 457-0122. Office hours for October and November are Monday through Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m.
The Duryea Borough Council will have their October work session and council meeting Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The public is invited to attend.
The Duryea Little League will have its monthly meeting Sunday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Duryea V.F.W. Post 1227, 492 Stephenson St.
The Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the post home, 329 Main St. All members are encouraged to attend. Participation will be greatly appreciated. Families of auxiliary members are asked to please update any membership statuses by calling the post at 457-4242 or mailing 329 Main St., Duryea PA 18642.
Flu Shots will be distributed Wednesday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Family Prescription Counter, 335 Main St., Duryea. Individuals with Medicare and First Priority insurances can obtain the shots for free. Individuals who do not have either of these insurances can get the shot for $30.
The Sons of the American Legion will have a second organizational meeting Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St. Qualifications for membership and structure of the proposed new squadron will be discussed at this time. A guest speaker from the district will be on hand to answer any questions attendees may have. Refreshments will be served.
The Friendly Social Club of Crossin Towers will have a wimpie and hot dog luncheon Thursday, Oct. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the community room of Crossin Towers, 500 Brown St. The menu includes your choice of a wimpie or hot dog, potato chips, dessert, and coffee or iced tea. Takeouts will be available too. The cost is $4 per person.
The Duryea Rec Board and the Duryea park committees will have their annual Halloween Spooktacular Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Healey Memorial Playground, Foote Avenue. Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, and Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. Anyone who has been impacted by someone else’s drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship.
