DUPONT: Two church festivals in borough just weeks away

Dupont’s churches will hold back-to-back local holiday festivals this month beginning with the Holy Mother of Sorrows celebrating the sensational summer season with their 32nd annual open-pit chicken barbeque dinner held on the parish grounds on Wyoming Ave.

The event, sponsored by the YMS of R will take place on Saturday, July 19, starting at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $8.00 each and can be purchased from any YMS of R member or by calling the rectory office during business hours. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event.

The menu includes a one- half slowly roasted chicken, fries, coleslaw, roll and dessert. Takeouts are available beginning at 2:00pm.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Lackawanna Ave., will follow with their three day festival of fun.

The annual Parish Picnic will be held on Thursday, July 31 and continue on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2. The event will be held on the parish grounds on 315 Lackawanna Ave. beginning each evening at 6:00 p.m.

Ethic food begin served include, pierogies, potato pancakes, haluski, and kielbaski.

There will be live entertainment nightly with: Joe Lastovica & Polka Punch on Thursday, John Stevens & Double Shoot on Friday and Saturday.

Bridge Project

The Turnpike Bridge construction project on Bear Creek Rd., aka Suscon Rd. over the Pa Turnpike will begin on Monday, July 6. The road will be closed until the scheduled completion in December, 2009. Traffic will be detoured to Armstrong Rd to Centerpoint to Oak/Rte315 by Ken Pollack Car Dealership.

Hose Company Drive

Dupont’s Volunteer Hose Company #1, 2009 annual fund drive is currently underway. The all volunteer fire department relies primarily on the generosity of the residents during this fund drive and your donation will truly be appreciated.

You can send your bequest to the Hose Company at 308 Main Street, Dupont or drop off your donation at the “Hub” on Bear Creek Rd. or call 654-4222 for more information.

Giant Flea Market

Holy Mother of Sorrows is planning a Giant Flea Market for Saturday, September 12 on the church grounds from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This event will be held the day before the parish’s annual Dozynki Festival.

Outside vendors, as well as, parishioners are welcome to participate. The cost is $20.00 per table under the big top. There will be a food stand with hot dogs and hamburger and assorted beverages. If you are interested in renting a table please contact Mrs. Regina Baheley at 457-2378 as soon as possible.

All reservations must be pre-paid. You can mail your payment /check payable to: Holy Mother of Sorrows, 212 Wyoming Ave. Dupont, Pa. 18641.

Party in the Park

If you have placed an order for the Party in the Park T- shirt, they are now available for pick-up at the borough office. You can still place an order by contacting Patty at the borough office. The 2nd annual Party in the Park will be held on Saturday, August 8.

The committee of the Fred Lokuta Golf Tournament will meet at the home of Michael Lokuta on Monday, July 6th at 7:30pm. All committee members are asked to attend. IF you wish to join the committee you are more than welcome to join the meeting on Monday. For additional information contact Michael at 654-6964.

Avoca Open

The Avoca AOH will again sponsor the Avoca Open Golf Tournament which will be held on Saturday, September 5th at the Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf course. More information will follow when it becomes available. Mark the date, September 5th.

The Avoca AOH will hold a golf meeting on July 9th at 7:30pm at James “Red” O’Brien’s home, 41 Chapel Street, Pittston, to continue plans for the Avoca Open Golf Tournament. All members are urged to attend.

Parish Committee

The Holy Mother of Sorrows Parish Committee will meet on Monday, July 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the parish hall. The Dozynki Committee will meet, also on July 6 at the parish hall beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Honor Roll

Thomas Killino, Principal and Mary Ann Paddock-Kaminski, Vice Principal are pleased to announce the fourth quarter honor roll for Wyoming Area Catholic School in the Holy redeemer School System of the Diocese of Scranton. Listed are the students who are members of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Dupont, who achieved the honor roll for the 4th quarter:

Appliance Pickup

There will a white goods /appliance pickup on July 29. You will need to purchase stickers for this quarterly pickup. Contact Patty McDonald at the municipal office for more information and pricing.

Ballroom Dancing

The Ballroom Dance Center of NEPA is offering a 4 week Ballroom and Latin Dance Course for FREE at the Dupont Hose Company Hall, Main Street, Dupont. This class is for the junior and youth divisions and will held on Wednesdays July 15th thru August 5th, 3:00 to 4:00 and 5:00 to 6:00. The dance course will be broken down into the following age categories: Young Adult Level: 19-25 years old; Senior Level: 16-18 years; Junior Level: 13-15 years; Pre-Teen:10-12 years; Youth Level: 5-9 years.

The students will learn Ballroom and Latin dance amalgamations, showcase routines and those interested can compete as well.

Tuesday, July 7- yard waste - 30 lb. limit per container

Wednesday, July 8 – recycling: mixed papers.

Additional refuse bags are available at the Hub One on Bear Creek Rd.
