DURYEA
In this day and age it’s hard to know who to trust. It seems every time we turn on the TV there is an ad about identity theft protection or a news report about financial scams and Wall Street corruption. If you’re searching for a way to protect yourself from these types of problems, securing your current assets, and planning your future, there are two events in town this week that may be for you.

Members of the Duryea V.F.W. Post 1227 and the American Legion Post 585 along with Mayor Keith Moss held Memorial Day Services at area cemeteries followed by a ceremony at the VFW Post home. Shown are Veterans from both posts along with VFW Commander John Pliska and American Legion Commander Ed Matt.

The first is a will and power of attorney planning session Wednesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Frank P. Crossin Towers, 500 Brown St.
This program is open to individuals who are 60 years old or older and are residents of Luzerne County. At this time, Frank Pasquini will assist individuals with writing their wills and provide information on the uses and necessities of power of attorney documents.
For more information or if you are interested in attending, please call Peggy at 457-2333.
And later that same day, the Area Agency on Aging “Center Without Walls” program will present an information session on fraud, scams, and identity theft from 1-3 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St.
The guest speaker will be from the Attorney General’s Office. Senior citizens and caregivers of elderly people are invited to attend this free event. Refreshments will be served.
Happy birthday to Ruth Brostowski and Paul Butrynovski who will celebrate their special days Monday, July 6.
Happy birthday to Ruth Grow who will celebrate her special day Wednesday, July 8.
Happy birthday to Phil Boccarzi who will celebrate his special day Friday, July 10.
Happy birthday to Toni Davis who will celebrate her special day Saturday, July
11.
The members of the Duryea Ambulance and Rescue Association would like to remind residents that their 2009 annual membership drive is underway. Please make your returns as soon as possible.
Get ready Duryea! One of the best festivals of the summer is coming to town this week! Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Joseph Churches will have their annual festival Friday, July 10 from 6-11 p.m., Saturday, July 11 from 5-11:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 12 from 4-9 p.m. on the picnic grounds of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 529 Stephenson St.
As you munch on some of the area’s best ethnic and traditional picnic foods, you will enjoy the live entertainment of Groove Train on Friday, The Cadillacs on Saturday, and Shakey Ground on Sunday. As you’re touring the grounds stopping to play bingo, games, and purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win baskets and cash prizes, you won’t want to miss the parish’s famous homemade potato pancake stand.
For those of you who love bingo (and I know there are many of you out there), you certainly won’t want to miss the parish’s pre-picnic bingo Thursday, July 9 in Sacred Heart Hall.
The doors open at 6 p.m., and the games start at 7 p.m. Prize packages will be awarded to the winners of the regular games and cash prizes will be available on the specials.
But before the bingo fun starts, the parish committee will open the doors at 5 p.m. for shoppers to check out their giant flea market in the lower level hall of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Stop by and look for early bargains!
