Voters will experience lengthy ballot on Tuesday

The time is almost here. Tuesday, May 19 is Primary Election Day. This year’s race is a crowded field of local interest and here is your choose of candidates seeking your vote in this primary election:

Dan Lello, incumbent, Democratic candidate for Mayor and Robert G. Kolankoski, Republican candidate for Mayor.

There are eight Democratic candidates running for 4 council seats and they are: Jeffrey M. Kaminski and Joseph Timinski,Jr, are running on the Democratic ticket for the 2 year term on Council; Stanley Knick, Jr., Joseph Russell Jones, Sr., Mark Kowalczyk, Brian Nesgoda,, Bruce Washney and Bernard J. Zielinski are vying for the 4 year term on Council.

William Elko, incumbent Democrat, will seek another term as Tax Collector.

Fred Pierantoni is running for District Magisterial District Court 11-1-04 and there are 4 coveted seats available on the Pittston Area School Board with 11 candidates seeking a seat on the board.

Beyond the local races there are 17 judicial candidates running for 2 seats on the Luzerne County Court and should it be approved there are 20 candidates seeking one of the 11 seats on the Home Rule Study Commission.

Needless to say, there is an abundant amount of candidates, so give yourself enough time to make your selections.

Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and voting will take place at the Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut Street. First time voters, please note you will be required to provide identification.

PACC Meeting

The Polish American Citizens Club will meet on today, May 17, at club home on Elm Street beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Welcoming Mass

The Women’s Society of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church will attend the 10:30 a.m. Mass today, May 17 as a group. In conjunction, a Welcoming Mass for all new members who joined Sacred Heart Parish will also take place at this service. Refreshments will be served in the church hall after the service.

Clothing Drive

Michael and Blase Twardowski of Boy Scout Troop 316 are collecting gently used children’s clothing as their project requirement for the Boy Scout religious badge. They are collecting clothing for newborn to size 16 for the Kids Closet Organization located in the old Seton High School. Clothing items can be placed in containers located in the church lobby of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Lackawanna Ave., for the next two weeks.

VFW Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Przybytek-Kundkas VFW Post 4909, Dupont will hold a special meeting for the installation of officers on Tuesday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the post home.

VFW Meeting

VFW Post 4909 will meet on Monday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the post home. Installation of officers will take place at this meeting. All members are urged to attend.

Mother of Sorrows

Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold their SOCL Commencement for Altar Servers and graduates today recognizing graduates, altar servers, children and youth that have fulfilled their commitment to attend School of Christian Living, as well as, comment the SOCL catechists for their dedication to their ministry.

A cookout will follow after the service at the parish hall.

For the month of May, devotions will be held every Wednesday at the Holy Mother of Sorrows PNCC beginning at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Code Enforcement

Effective Wednesday, May 13 after passage at the regular monthly meeting held on May 12, Code Enforcement/Borough Manager will do site visits to each property in town issuing warnings of violation of the borough Property Maintenance Code 2006. After 10 days of noncompliance, citations will be issued and enforcement process followed.

Violations include: storage of junk items, abandoned unlicensed vehicles, building code violations. For a complete copy of the code please stop by the borough office during regular business hours.

Bulk Pick-up

Dupont’s Public Works Dept. bulk-pick-up is underway for the month of May. If you have not scheduled a pick-up you can still do so by contacting the municipal office at 655-6216.

SH Meetings

Meetings at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church:

Picnic committee chairpersons will meet on Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the rectory.

The Parish Finance Council will meet on Friday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the rectory.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day Services will be celebrated on Monday, May 25, Memorial Day at 8:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery Chapel and at Holy Mother of Sorrows PNCC cemetery at 9:00 a.m.

Bible School

Parish Vacation Bible School for children K thru 4th will be held from June 22 thru June 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Registration forms will be available in the lobby of Sacred Heart Church or by contacting Elaine at 654-6952. Cost of the program is $25.00 and deadline for registration is June 14th.

Poppy Sale

The VFW Post 4909 will is sponsoring their annual Poppy Sale for the month of May. They will be selling poppies today at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Holy Mother of Sorrows Church after all Masses this morning.

Party in the Park

June fundraiser for the “Party in the Park”: A $25.00 money/lottery ticket tree. Tickets are sale at the Polish American Citizens Club, Elm St., from May 17th thru 23rd and at the municipal office May 24th thru May 30th. Cost per ticket is a $1.00 each.

AmVets Meeting

AmVets will meet on Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Polish American Citizens Club. Delegates will be chosen for the State Convention which will be held in June. All members are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Thefts Reported

There have been reports of missing items taken from residents back porch on Spruce Street this past week. The incident is being investigated by Chief of Police, Tony Demark. Residents are asked to be diligent and report any suspicious activities as soon as possible to the police department.

Parade Plans

Plans are under way for the Memorial Day parade scheduled for Monday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. On Saturday, May 23 local veterans and veteran supporters will assemble at the VFW Post 4909 on Main Street at 9:30 a.m. At 10:00 a.m. the group will proceed to Holy Mother of Sorrows and Sacred Heart of Jesus cemeteries to place flags.

Walter J. Victor, a native of Dupont, U.S. Army Technician Fourth Grade and a WWII war hero has been chosen to Parade Marshal for this year’s annual parade. He served 33 months in combat and is decorated with 2 Bronze Stars, Silver Star, 8 Combat Stars and a Purple Heart for service in Africa, Northern France, French Morocco, Ardennes, Belgium, Germany, Sicily, Tunisia and Utah Beach on D-Day. Mr. Victor is also a retired Atlanta Braves stadium operations photographer of 40 years.

After the parade a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the borough building memorial lawn at 11:00 a.m. Commanders and representatives of Local veteran organizations will offer remarks. LTC Judah M. Whitney, Commander of 1-109 Infantry Division National Guard in Scranton will be this years Principle Speaker. At the conclusion of the program refreshments will be served for the young adults at the Dupont Hose Company and for adults at the VFW Post Home.
