WA Diamond Club hosts ‘Meet the Warriors’ today

The Wyoming Area Diamond Club will host “Meet the Warriors” from grades 7 through 12 today at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center Cafeteria.

Immaculate Conception Church will hold a Night at the Races on Saturday, April 10, with post time at 7:00 p.m. and doors opening at 6:00 p.m. A $3.00 donation includes food and refreshments. To reserve a table, call Rosalie Bugelholl at 654-1356. For program sponsorships, call Jerry Wall at 693-1354. There will be a Mass for the ballplayers at St. Anthony’s Church, Exeter, at 11:00 a.m. prior to the event. Refreshments will be served at the cafeteria. There will be a Chinese Auction, 50/50 and much more.

The Wyoming Area Diamond Club invites you to join them in wishing their baseball Warriors good luck on a successful 2010 baseball season.

Egg Hunt

The West Pittston Little League will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 27, at 1:00 p.m. at the Little League field for children age 10 and under. Rain date will be Sunday, March 28, at 1:00 p.m. The Easter Bunny will be hopping by for a special visit

Women’s Club

The West Pittston Women’s Club will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m. This meeting will feature a Chinese Auction and members are asked to bring an article for the auction.

Due to the fact that the February meeting was canceled, members are reminded to bring along articles that were to go into Valentine bags and Easter bags to be delivered to the club members who are homebound.

Committee chairwoman is Rosalie Bugelholl. Committee members are: Alberta Pastva, Ann Ringden, Connie Butler, Eleanor Troiani, and Louise Wruble.

Guests are welcome to attend.

Retirees Luncheon

The Wyoming Area Education Association Retirees will hold their annual luncheon at the Avenue Dinner, Wyoming on Wednesday, March 17, at 11:30 a.m. Members will meet in the rear banquet room and order from a special menu.

Reservations are not required, but it would be helpful if you could RSVP at the WA Federal Credit Union at 693-1339 or contact Gloria, Phil or Sandy.

Ziti Dinner

Wyoming Area Softball Parents will hold a ziti dinner and craft show on March 21. There are still a few spots left for anyone interested in being a vendor at the show. Anyone interested can contact Nancy Alberigi at 693-3568.

WA Drama Club

There will be an “Angel Night” on March 18 for presale tickets for the upcoming play, “Sound of Music” put on by the Wyoming Area Drama Club. Check back here next week for more information.

Tax Reminder

George Miller, borough tax collector, announces West Pittston 2010 County and Borough Tax Bills have been mailed directly to the homeowners.

The tax office is opened on Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon during the rebate period. Rebate period starts now and will end on April 17. Face period will be from April 18 through June 17.

Rams Football

This is the 40th year for the West Pittston Rams football and cheerleading squads. They are refitting and repainting their helmets to match the original design of white Rams horns on the green helmet, with white facemask.

The Board is considering moving to a green football jersey with a 40th Anniversary logo to honor the past teams.

Parents of players are encouraged to share their thoughts by contacting president@westpittstonrams.com and to watch the Rams website for the next Board meeting to attend to discuss in person.

The Board reminds all players and cheerleaders that the Rams Association will host the 9 cheer teams of the WVWYFCC for the League Cheerleading Competition at the Warriors stadium on Saturday, September 25.

Parents of football and cheerleaders will participate in a variety of capacities to ensure this is a safe, organized, fun and financially successful event. The cheerleading competition committee is being formed now and will meet in early March to begin preparations for the event.

Yoga: Beginner 1 - Every Tuesday & Thursday through May 27: 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Discover the benefits of yoga! Anne Bramblett Barr, library director and certified yoga instructor, leads a class for all experience levels. With a focus on building a strong foundation classical yoga postures, proper breathing and alignment, students will increase their strength, flexibility, range of motion, balance and feel more focused and relaxed. Classes are held in former American Legion Building on Linden St. by the Montgomery Ave. Elementary School. Look for the black awning. $7 drop-in; discounted punch passes available.

West Pittston Library Book Club - First Tuesday of each month at 6:45 p.m.

Grab a cup of coffee and join the WPL Book Club in an informal discussion of member-selected books. There’s no need to purchase the books; just ask at the circulation desk for an available copy of the month’s selection. The group will be discussing on April 6, Loving Frank by Nancy Horan and Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout on May 4.

Dirt Diggers: Plant Propagation - Wednesday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Giver yourself props for propagating your own plants! Penn State Master Gardner Barbara Soyka will teach you how to grow all of your favorite plants from seed, cuttings, dividing, grafting and layering.

Dirt Diggers: Container Gardening - Wednesday, April 7 6:30 p.m.

Calling all green thumbs! It’s time to dust off your gardening gloves and discover the beauty of a four-season container garden. Penn State Extension Master Gardeners Jean Kolojejchick and Roseann Nardone will share their own container garden projects with you, including ones with spring flowers and bulbs.

Dirt Diggers: Organic Vegetable Gardening Basics: Wednesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Interested in joining the organic vegetable gardening craze, but unsure of where to start of what it entails? Penn State Extension Master Gardener and organic vegetable gardener Ron Petro will present the basics starting with the most important element first: your soil.

Centerpiece Arrangement Workshop: Wednesday, March 31 6:30 p.m.

Skip the live bunnies and ducks this year and wow your family with an Easter centerpiece. Our Thanksgiving arrangement workshop with Carmen’s Flowers was such a hit that we’re ready to reprise it this spring. Cost covers materials, which are provided, $20.00/person.

Nature Walk: Trees of the Susquehanna, Saturday, April 19, 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

Celebrate the warmer weather by joining us on a nature walk around West Pittston. We’ll have a biologist on hand to give us tree identification tips and discuss the variety of trees that are growing along the Susquehanna River. Be sure to bring your binoculars and wear comfortable shoes. Dogs and children are welcome! The walk starts and ends at the library. After the walk, we’ll have coffee, tea and goodies from Sweet Caroline’s at the library.

Basic Computer Classes: Thursday evenings 6:30-7:30 p.m. from March 4 to April 1

David J. Reese, a veteran of the United States Air Force, is a knowledgeable PC Specialist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems Technology and 14 years experience in many different operating systems, computers, laptops, printers and other peripheral devices. He owns and operates Rescued PC and is ready to teach you some computing skills.

This beginner class offers students insight into the basics of a computer. By the end of the class you will know all the different parts of a computer and you’ll be able to turn off the computer correctly, manage your desktop, icons and folders. You’ll also learn to open files and save files, finally set up that printer and personalize your computer by changing the background or screen saver. We’ll cover how to use the Internet and discover what it has to offer. $35.00/person.

Everyday Electronics for Beginners: Monday afternoon 1:00-2:00 p.m. from April 19 to May 17

John Burke, who has over two decades of experience in the electronics field of technical support in system and hardware repair, will teach a class for individuals who want to learn how to better operate the devices and programs that make up our business and personal lives: cell phones (including Smart Phones like Blackberries and iPhones), email accounts, web browsers and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Space is limited so sign up early! $35.00/person.

Tax Workshop: Saturday, March 20 at 2:30 p.m.

Interested in what deductions you may qualify for this tax season? Andrea Schiappa, CPA will hold a tax workshop for those looking to get the best return possible.

The Pampered Chef is Cooking Up Donations for the Library - March 22 - April 17

What’s better than using that amazing, indestructible PC spatula? Knowing that each time you use it, you helped to support your local library. Corrine Farrell from Pampered Chef and a West Pittston resident read about the $5,000.00 challenge donation and is offering to donate a part of her proceeds to the library. Catalogs will be available at the library on March 22 and you can place orders at the library until April 17. Corrine will be at the library on April 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. to take orders, answer questions or to book a party. If you book a party with Corrine, additional money will be donated to the library! You can pick up your order on May 6 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. just in time for Mother’s Day gifts.

Library Challenge

West Pittston Library patrons are reminded of the $5,000.00 challenge which has been offered to the library. Donations are coming in and they are getting close to the challenge amount. They still need to hear from more patrons. The library fund appeal committee sincerely appreciates all those patrons who have donated to this challenge.

Fire Dept. Drive

The fund drive letters have been sent out for the Fire Department and the fundraiser is underway.

The fire department is 100% volunteer and donations mean everything to their survival.
