If you’re a New York Yankees or Philadelphia Phillies fan, this year’s World Series is especially exciting for you.
I know Avoca’s biggest Yankee fan (and especially of Derek Jeter) Grace Nolan and Avoca Phillies fan Joe Shimko are staying up late to catch every inning of this fall classic.
Regardless of your favorite team, be sure to catch some of this series. It’s probably one of the best baseball fans have seen in years.

Residents of the second ward who previously voted at the Avoca Municipal Building will vote at the Avoca Community Center, 800 Main St., for the November 3 general election.
Avoca Tax Collector Therese Wrubel will not be collecting taxes at the Avoca Municipal Building while it undergoes some renovations. Residents can submit their taxes to Mrs. Wrubel by mailing them to her home office at 129 Factory St., Avoca PA 18641 or visiting her at this address Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches will have All Souls Day cemetery services today at 2 p.m. at SS. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery and 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
SS. Peter and Paul’s Church altar and rosary society will have their advent pierogi sale this month. The pierogies are potato cheese flavored and are $6 per dozen. To place an order, please call Arline Sable at 457-5793, Mary Jane Kuchar at 457-9248, or Louise Chernefski at 346-3555. But you’d better hurry! The deadline to place your order is today.
In addition to taking orders, the ladies are also seeking volunteers to help make the pierogies November 12-16 at 9 a.m. in the lower level of the church, 1000 Main St. Anyone who is interested in helping in encouraged to attend.
Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad crossing, which is situated in West Avoca near the Mill Creek Flood Control Channel, will be closed temporarily November 2-6 for track restoration. Proper detour signs will be posted.
The Avoca V.F.W. Post 8335 Ladies Auxiliary will meet Monday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the post home, 915 Main St. District President Debby Wojiechowicz will present her annual report on the auxiliary’s activities. President June Fitzgerald will preside over the meeting, and Pat Rinkus, Marilyn O’Boyle, and Joan Emlaw will be the hostesses for it. All members are urged to attend this important meeting.
SS. Peter and Paul’s Church altar and rosary society will meet Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. to pray the rosary followed by their meeting at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, which is located in the lower level of the church, 1000 Main St. During this meeting, the ladies will elect officers and plan their upcoming Christmas party.
The Avoca Lions Club will have an eye bank meeting Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at the V.F.W. Post 8335, 915 Main St.
The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church will have their First Friday healing Mass November 6 at 7 p.m. at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. Come and receive the healing that only Christ can give.
Beginning November 8, St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches will add an 11:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays at St. Mary’s Church.

SS. Peter and Paul’s Church finance council will meet Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St.
The Avoca Borough will have yard waste collections Tuesday, Nov. 10 and 24 weather permitting. In addition to collecting grass clippings and leaves, the borough workers will also collect shrubs, hedge clippings, and tree limbs. Please note that grass clippings and leaves may be placed in the same container but other yard waste must be placed in a separate container. The tree limbs should not exceed three feet in length and one-half inch in diameter.
Please note that rocks, stones, dirt, and animal waste are not acceptable forms of yard waste and will not be collected. A maximum of three open containers, not exceeding 30 pounds, will be allowed per collection. Please do not put your collection items in plastic bags. They will not be collected.
The V.F.W. Post 8335 Ladies Auxiliary will host a district meeting Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s School Auditorium, 742 Spring St. Several visiting auxiliaries will be present at this meeting. District President Debra Wojslechowicz will preside over the meeting. Dinner will be served in the V.F.W. Post Home, 915 Main St., following the meeting. All members are urged to attend.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul Churches will have a 40 Hours Eucharistic Celebration November 15-17 at St. Mary’s Church, 715 Hawthorne St. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place each day following the 8 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s until the 7 p.m. service each evening.
On Sunday, Nov. 15, there will be a Eucharistic Holy Hour for the 7 p.m. evening mass. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, there will be a special procession with the Blessed Sacrament.
Rev. David Betts will be the guest homilist.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches’ high school youth group will meet Sunday, Nov. 15 from 6-9 p.m. in St. Mary’s Rectory meeting room, 715 Hawthorne St. All high school students are invited to attend.

The members of the Avoca Hose Company will have their annual Christmas tree sale beginning Sunday, Nov. 29. If you would like to order a tree that is more than 10 feet tall, please call the hose company at 457-2894.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Church is seeking non-perishable food items and monetary gifts for their food bank for the needy. Food donations can be left in the boxes in either of the church vestibules. Monetary gifts can be given to the food bank by placing a gift in an envelope marked food bank and dropping it in the collection basket at any weekend Mass.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s high school youth group is selling Entertainment Books for $20 each.
The books contain numerous coupons and discounts for area restaurants, attractions, and retail establishments and make a great gift.
