Anthony L. Clifford, Sr., died peacefully on February 23, 2010.
He was born on June 20, 1928, was a widower and father of four, and was one of nine children. He was raised in West Avoca and spent his formative years, along with his eight sisters, working the family business - a soda fountain. At 17, he graduated from Avoca High School, falsified his date of birth, and joined the U.S. Army Airborne Division. P.F.C. He served most of his time as a member of the Pacific occupying force. Upon return, he applied his knowledge of food service and managed lunch counters in a young, upcoming company, McCrory’s Five and Dime. It was a life decision, much like marrying his eternal love, Helen Theresa O’Malley, in the year 1951.
Moving from state to state, he climbed the ladder of success, reaching the position of Vice President by 1985. In 1989, he left McCrory’s for retirement, and established a residence at Eagle Rock (then "Valley of Lakes"), where he spent the majority of his later life bike riding, volunteering, walking and enjoying picturesque sunsets ... but above everything, his precious grandchildren, Evan, Sam, Anthony, Kimberly, Lucy, Emmitt, Christopher and Attikos.
Survivors include sisters, Teresa Lokuta and Mary Wallace; children and in-laws Suzanne Jones and her husband, Michael; Anthony Clifford and his wife, Athena; Patrick Clifford and his wife, Angela; and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Kiesinger Funeral Services, 255 McAlpine St., Duryea, with Father Phillip Sladicka, of St. Mary’s Church, Avoca, officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time Sunday. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Nuremberg Cemetery, Nuremberg.
