Francis Louis "Frank" Pineno, 82, Selinsgrove, died October 22, 2009 due to post-operative complications while a patient in Sunbury Community Hospital. His wife of 58 years is the former Mariam Ruth Davis.
He was born on July 16, 1927, in the family home in Wyoming, a son of the late Phillip and Josephine Mullay Pineno. He graduated from Wyoming Memorial High School in 1945, and receiving his undergraduate music degree from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1949 after a stint in the U.S. Navy and an honorable discharge. His Master of Music in Education degree was awarded at Penn State University in 1953. He served on the Corontowan yearbook staff and joined the Phi Mu Alpha professional music fraternity. Other current memberships include the Sunbury City Band, American Legion Post, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. He began his music teaching career in 1949 at the Hamlin Township, McKean County, school district, where he served four years as vocal instructor grades 1-12 and as band instructor. He moved to Selinsgrove in 1953 where he taught instrumental music lessons and band grades 4-12. In 1963, he received the prestigious John Hay Fellowship in Humanities, a six-week study at Williams College in Massachusetts. He continued his bass violin playing from his own high school group through the Esquires Jazz band at Mansfield and for many years with the local dance combo The 4 Notes. He was accepted into the Band Masters Association, provided leadership as vice president and president of District 8 PMEA and the PMEA executive committee. He was Rotary Club "Man of The Year," 40 years as founder and director of the Selinsgrove Area Adult Band before joining the lower brass section as a player, High School Pa. Citation of Excellence winner for District 8 in 1990. He volunteer-taught Selinsgrove Area Middle School instrumentalists for several years after retirement until the current school year
Survivors are Jonathan Phillip Pineno and wife, Evelyn Anne Bachelder-Pineno; Elizabeth Gayl Pineno-Barron and husband, David; Michael Davis Pineno and wife, Sherry; Martha Louise Pineno-Hess and husband, Todd; grandchildren Jeffery M. Barron and wife, Nicole; Christopher A. Barron; Laura E. Barron; Stephanie M. Pineno and partner Robert Verosky; and Phillip A. Pineno; great-grandchildren Caleb J. Verosky and Sienna G. Verosky; step-grandchildren Stephen, Philip and Carolyn Coccorese; Amanda L. Martin and husband, Boyd; and step-great-granddaughters Sarah, Autumn, Rachel, Bethany and Madelyn Martin; sister Particia Musloski and husband, Victor; an aunt and an uncle; as well as numerous first cousins.
Funeral services were Oct. 24 from the Seebold Funeral Home, Selinsgrove, with Deanna Finch officiating. Interment Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
Contributions in Frank’s memory may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
