William J. Reed

William J. Reed, 81, Hughestown, died March 3, 2010 in the VNA Hospice at Heritage House Wilkes Barre. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife the former Ellen Neary Reed, who died August 7, 1996

Born in Pittston, son of the late Walter and Alice Mullen Reed, he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. He was a graduate of Pittston High School and earned a bachelor of science Degree in Business and Finance from the University of Scranton, he served our country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Korean War, he received the National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with seven stars. He was employed as the business manager at General Tire in Scranton, before beginning a long and distinguished career in real estate. He joined Morris Real Estate in Clarks Summit, as a real estate salesman in 1964, after he earned his brokers license, the company became Morris-Reed Real Estate and eventually Reed Real Estate, with offices first in Clarks Summit and then in Pittston. Reed Real Estate merged with JJ Mantione appraisal and realty group in 2008, where he continued his career as an associate broker until his death. He was past president and former board member of the Scranton Association of Realtors, and was a former board member and served on various committees on the Wilkes-Barre Association of Realtors. In 1996 he was honored as the realtor of the year by the Wilkes Barre Association of realtors and in 2009 he was honored as a realtor Emeritus by the National Association of Realtors. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, a former member and past president of the Greater Pittston Kiwanis Society, a former member of Fox Hill Country Club, and a former member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce.

The Family would like to express their heart-felt gratitude to Pat McHale and her husband Charlie of Hughestown, for the love and support they always provided to Bill, particularly during the last few years of his life as he confronted alzheimer’s disease

He is survived by a son Atty. Richard G. Reed, and wife Richelle, Laflin; two grandsons Brian Reed, Exeter; and Christopher Reed, Laflin; one sister Lois Burns, and husband Jack, Clarks Summit; one brother-in-law Richard Cosgrove, Pittston; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was March 13 from the Adonizio Funeral Home, Pittston with mass of Christian Burial in St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston, Interment Parish Cemetery.
