Down in south Pittston, at the ‘Fork in the Road” as the old timers say, in the back of the Falcone Beverage building, a group calling themselves the South Pittston Social Club sprang up a year or so ago seemingly out of nowhere.
Mostly retired fellas, they get together daily over coffee and smokes and, as the saying goes, “solve the world’s problems.”
Well, now they are committed to solving a local problem.
And not just talking about it, but really solving it.
The guys became aware of a family in need temporarily housed at a nearby motel. The tale of Douglass Jacobson and his family was detailed in a story in the Dispatch last Sunday and appears again in a follow-up on page 7 today.
The guy packed up his family and all of their belongings back in Michigan and drove here looking for work. An experienced truck driver, he figured there would be plenty of opportunity in these parts what with our interstate and turnpike systems. Turned out he was right. He’s already landed a driving job.
But the family was robbed and cannot seem to get back on their feet. Douglass is working, but their problems have been insurmountable.
That’s where the Social Club guys come in. They’ve taken it upon themselves to help these out-of-towners and have been doing a pretty good job. But the problem is getting too big for them.
Lou Biscotto, a key figure in the club, called a meeting for tomorrow night, Monday, August 24 at 7 p.m. at the club at 320 South Main for anyone who can come forward with ideas or help in any way. Those who want to help but cannot attend the meeting can call Lou at 540-3103.
Lou has faith that the good people of Greater Pittston will come through for this family.
We do too.
We have always said that Greater Pittston is the heart of the Valley with a Heart.
