Got a job? Give thanks

It’s hard to find good news in an unemployment rate that has climbed to 9.7% but government figures released last week indicate that while unemployment is on the rise, it is rising at a slower pace.

We’re not sure that means those still working can now breathe a sigh of relief. And we have no idea how that news can be comforting for those out of work.

But one thing for sure, right now – Labor Day weekend – is a darned good time for those working to be especially appreciative of their jobs.

May we suggest that before you get on with your Labor Day celebrating this year, take a moment to give thanks for your job and perhaps say a little prayer for those looking for work.

If you’d care to do that as part of a group, you might consider the Labor Day Mass at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary on Route 315 in Laflin. It begins at 10:30 a.m.

Each Labor Day weekend, the Oblate priests honor St. Joseph the Worker.

That tradition seems particularly poignant this year.
