Gymnastics Is Back!

By Laura Musto Cowher

The Greater Pittston YMCA is offering a sneak peek at its fall sports program line-up.

Under the direction returning program director, Mike Riddle, the YMCA is offering a variety of new sports programs this fall along with some old favorites. The fall session begins September 8, 2009.

Kicker Soccer Clinics heads the line-up. The clinics are designed for children ages 6 to 12-years-old. The co-ed clinics allow children to learn footwork, ball control, and participate in daily scrimmages in a positive and fun environment. Also, back by popular demand is the Micro-All Sports class. The co-ed class is geared for children ages 3 and 4-years-old. Children are introduced to the fundamentals of basketball, t-ball, floor hockey and indoor soccer. This class encourages parents to come and cheer their children on!

A variety of basketball clinics and workshops are also planned for youths and teens this fall. The YMCA’s FUNdamental Basketball Development Clinic teaches children, ages 6 to 12-years-old, to develop their playing skills. A Parent Child Clinic will allow adults and children alike to enjoy the game of basketball. Children, ages 6 to 12-years-old, will learn the latest drills, techniques and instructional ideas. Parents will learn how to help their children develop their skills.

For the serious hoopster, a Form Shooting Workshop is also planned. The workshops are designed for youths and teens and focus on ready position, hand position, shot pocket, follow through and stationary shooting, among other techniques.

A Youth Fitness and Circuit Training for Kids will also be launched this fall.

The Youth Fitness Program will allow children to explore weight lifting, swimming and interactive play in the YMCA’s EXERPARK. The Circuit Training Program will get children into the habit of exercise. The classes focus on learning exercises, proper equipment use, and special exercises.

Finally, Gymnastics and Karate will return this fall at the YMCA. Gymnastics classes will run Saturday mornings. A wide variety of classes, from beginner to advanced, is being offered and private lessons are also available. Kids can also learn the Goshin Jutsu style karate with a Black Belt certified instructor.

There is a lot in store this fall at The Greater Pittston YMCA.

For more information on classes and registration, call the YMCA at 655-2255 ext. 107.
