Learn to swim

By Laura Musto Cowher

It’s never too late to get your feet wet.

This fall, the Greater Pittston YMCA is offering adult and high school swim lessons to get members comfortable in the water. Lessons begin on September 8, 2009, the start of the new fall session. Level I lessons teach individuals to overcome their fear of the water and teach basic swimming. Level II lessons help swimmers to improve endurance and learn proper stroke technique.

Also, new at the YMCA is Junior Water Polo. Sign-ups are now underway for the program which is open to children ages 9 to 14. Back by popular demand, is the Competitive Stroke Clinic. The clinic begins Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 12 p.m. and runs five weeks. The clinic is open to swimmers ages 5 to 17 and teaches all four competitive strokes and diving.

The Master Swim program is also continuing in the fall at the YMCA. Alicia Bryk, a competitive collegian swimmer in the Mac Conference, oversees the program.

The Piranhas Swim Team will also kick off its fall season in September. Children ages 6 to 14 are eligible to join.

As always, Saturday and weekday group lessons are open to children of all ages and abilities.

Classes run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Wednesday evenings.

Private and semi-private youth swim lessons are also available.

The Greater Pittston YMCA is located at 10 N. Main St. in Pittston. For information on classes and membership call Laura at 655-2255 ext 103.
