Sauce Wars

By Laura Musto Cowher

It’s time to test your taste buds! The Greater Pittston YMCA is hosting the Second Annual Sauce Wars at the Pittston Tomato Festival. The Festival runs Thursday, August 20, to Sunday, August 23. Each year the YMCA hosts a booth at the festival to provide residents with information about our programs, memberships and scholarships. Last year, the YMCA introduced Sauce Wars. The contest invites festival goers to sample the marinara sauce of participating restaurants. Participants vote on the sauce they like the best and a winner is chosen. Sauce Wars is hosted at the YMCA booth.

“This is a great way for the community to learn about our local eateries and, at the same time, learn about our organization,” said Tina Fisher, executive director.

Four restaurants have signed on for the challenge. Participating in this year’s event is Caf Olivia, Grico’s Restaurant, Tony’s Pizza, and Savo’s Pizza. Each restaurant will donate 6 gallons of their homemade marinara sauce to the YMCA stand for testing. Those who choose to vote on the marinara sauces take their job seriously.

“Each person gets a cup of sauce. Some dip bread in the sauce, others taste test with a spoon,” said Fisher. “I’ve even seen voters drink the sauce to get the full effect.”

The winning restaurant will be announced Sunday at the festival. Area restaurants interested can call Laura Cowher at 655-2255.

Staff and volunteers will be manning the YMCA booth during the festival.
