Y EXERCISE?
By Laura Musto Cowher
Want to become a lifeguard? The Greater Pittston YMCA can help.
The YMCA is offering a lifeguard certification course this June. The four-day course runs June 6, 7, 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is open to participants 15 and older.
“This is a great opportunity for teenagers to be able to get their first job. This will allow them to lifeguard anywhere,” said Judy Rostkowski, aquatics director. “This is a skill they will keep with them for a lifetime.”
Classes include Red Cross life saving, CPR, AED and first aid. Cost of the course is $200. For more information call Judy at 655-2255.
A stroke clinic is also being offered for swimmers on May 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. The clinic is opened to participants ages 5 to 17 and emphasizes stroke technique, drills, starts and turns. Age Group League and Master League swim coaches will instruct the clinic. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers.
Finally, the Master Swim Program and Swim Team at the Greater Pittston YMCA is now underway and is open to swimmers 18 and older. Taught by Alicia Bryk, a competitive swimmer in the MAC Conference, the program is designed to improve stroke development and stamina.
Practices for the Master Swim Program run Wednesdays from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.; Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sundays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $50 for members and $75 for program members for 10, two-hour practices.
There also will be a lot to do out of the water this summer at the Greater Pittston YMCA. The organization is offering a series of sports camps starting in June for children. A basketball camp will kick-off the summer season from June 22 to 25. A cheerleading camp on July 6 to 9, youth football camp July 13 to 16, indoor field hockey camp July 20 to 23, and gymnastics camp July 27 to 30, will round out the summer.
The Greater Pittston YMCA will also host a Three on Three Basketball Tournament in June and Mother/Daughter Self Defense classes will start this summer at the YMCA
The Greater Pittston YMCA is located at 10 N. Main St. in Pittston. For information on classes and membership call Laura at 655-2255.
