Y EXERCISE
By Laura Musto Cowher
Children with autism are having fun and learning safety in the pool.
The Autism Swim at the Greater Pittston YMCA has had much success over the past several months.
Aquatics Director Judy Rostkowski started the program over a year ago to teach autistic children basic swimming techniques and water safety.
The Autism Swim is open to children of all ages. Certified instructors teach the classes, which offers one-on-one sessions for children. The classes help autistic children to relax in the water and become comfortable with their surroundings.
“Each child is different. Some won’t look you in the eye; some won’t talk,” said Rostkowski. “You have to figure out how to get through to them.”
Each child’s ability is assessed when they begin lessons, she said. Visual stimulation is used to teach children swimming techniques. The lessons also help kids develop muscle strength, build confidence and develop social skills.
“When he is in the water he is very focused. He can’t wait to come for lessons,” said Kelly Widdick, whose son Ayden takes lessons. “He went from not doing anything in the water to swimming the whole end of the pool.”
Shai Norton’s son Cade also takes lessons. She said the one-on-one swim time has helped Cade to become more social, develop trust and take challenges.
The Earthly Angels Foundation funds the lessons. Donations are always welcome to expand the program.

Once again, the Greater Pittston YMCA is making it easy to get in shape. A variety of specials are now underway to make visiting the organization more affordable to patrons.
The YMCA is offering a Three-Month for $99 special for adults. A 2-for-1 Youth Membership special, valued at $75, is also underway. Finally, members who refer a friend to the YMCA will get one month free on their membership.
Also, the Greater Pittston YMCA offers financial assistance to individuals and families through its scholarship program funded by the United Way.
The Greater Pittston YMCA is located at 10 N. Main St. in Pittston. For information on classes and membership call Laura at 655-2255.
