First Anniversary

Jacquelyn and James Galvin, Avoca, are celebrating their first wedding anniversary today. The couple was united in the sacrament of marriage Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at St. Mary’s Church, Avoca, by the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka, pastor, and the Rev. Joseph G. Elston.

The bride was escorted to the altar by her brother, Tom. She chose her cousin, Katie Donelan, Scranton, and her friend, Gail Dvornicky, Pittston, as her maids of honor. The bridesmaids were Lindsey Gorniak, Scranton, cousin of the bride; Mary Kay Pivovarnik, Scranton, and Sarah Galvin, Avoca, sisters of the groom; and Sherri Petrokonis, West Pittston, and Irene Kovaleski, Plains, friends of the bride. The bride’s cousin Cailey Ware, Clarks Summit, and the groom’s Goddaughter and niece Morgan Pivovarnik, Scranton, were junior bridesmaids. The bride’s cousin, Kate Donelan, Cockeysville, Md., was the flower girl.

The groom chose his brothers, Sean Galvin, Wilmington, N.C., and Joseph Galvin, Avoca, as his best men. The groomsmen were Corey Ware, Clarks Summit, cousin of the bride; Eugene Pivovarnik, Scranton, brother-in-law of the groom; and Dr. Jeffery Lewis, Hanover Twp., Stanley Exeter, Royersford, and James Gattuso, Yatesville, friends of the groom. The bride’s cousin, Ricky Gorniak, Scranton, was the ring bearer.

Scriptural readings were given by Nancy Kobal, Scranton, aunt and Godmother of the bride; Jacqueline Donelan, Moosic, cousin of the bride; and David Donovan, Moosic, cousin of the groom. Offertory gifts were presented by Mary Costa, Scranton, aunt of the bride; Linda King, Scranton, cousin of the bride; and Jack Galvin, Avoca, uncle and Godfather of the groom. The Eucharistic Ministers were John and Marian Donelan, Scranton, uncle and aunt of the bride. The altar servers were Cody and Charlie McAdarra, Avoca, friends of the bride and groom. During the Nuptial Mass, a special memorial candle was lit and the “The Lord’s Prayer” was sung in loving memory of the father of the bride. Musical selections were provided by Celia Hottenstein, soloist; Lynn Hurst, violinist; Brian Mallory, trumpeter; Brenda Nighbert, flutist; and Anthony Petrone, organist.

A bridal shower was hosted by the mothers of the bride and groom and the bridal attendants at Arcaro and Genell’s Restaurant, Old Forge. The parents of the groom hosted a rehearsal dinner at The Stadium Club, Moosic. The couple was honored at an evening cocktail hour and reception at Colarusso’s LaPalazzo, Moosic, with entertainment provided by the band Fancy Dancer of Frankie Carll Productions.

Mrs. Galvin is the former Jacquelyn Borthwick. She is the daughter of Lorraine Borthwick, Duryea, and the late John Borthwick. She is the granddaughter of the late John and Catherine Donelan and the late Thomas and Sarah Borthwick.

Mrs. Galvin is a 1992 honors graduate of Pittston Area High School and a 1996 honors graduate of King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with minors in marketing and psychology. She is also a 2005 honors graduate of King’s College, where she earned a Master of Science degree in health care administration with concentrations in marketing and public relations. Mrs. Galvin is employed as a graphic designer/writer/editor in the office of college marketing and advertising at King’s College. She is also the Avoca and Duryea community news columnist for The Sunday Dispatch.

Mr. Galvin is the son of James A. and Carol Galvin, Avoca. He is the grandson of the late Joseph and Mildred Donovan and the late James P. and Alice Galvin.

Mr. Galvin is a 1988 graduate of Seton Catholic High School, Pittston. He is also a 2007 honors graduate of Keystone College, La Plume, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication arts and humanities. Mr. Galvin is employed as an associate in the retirement services division of Prudential Financial, Scranton. He is also the Old Forge, Moosic, and Taylor sports writer for The Triboro Banner.

The couple honeymooned at Walt Disney World Resorts, Orlando, Fla., and will celebrate their first anniversary with a weekend trip to the Pocono Mountains.
