Annual Bark at the Park slated for October 3

Join the 19th Annual SPCA Bark at the Park at Frances Slocum State Park on Saturday, October 3. Registration begins at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m. there will be a Blessing of the Animals, then the walk begins.

There will be free t-shirts for the first 500 walkers, a basket raffle with dozens to choose from! No-wait express check-in for pre-registered walkers only! See details at www.spcaluzernecounty.org or call 825-4111. See how you could avoid waiting in line on the day of the walk! Free face-painting and temporary tattoos for kids as well as free coffee and donuts before and hot dogs and soda after the walk for all walk participants.

Scholars Program-

An area freshman at Lycoming College has been accepted into the Lycoming Scholars Program, which is designed to meet the needs of students with superior intellectual ability. Allyson Marianelli, a resident of Old Forge, is a graduate of Old Forge High School.

Scholars are admitted to the program based on high school achievement. Scholars must complete higher-level distribution courses, as well as an Independent Project during their junior or senior year.

For the fall semester, Marianelli will study the timely issue of war and will discuss the question, “Is war one of the fundamental human experiences?” The seminar is led by Lycoming College faculty members and will also feature speakers from other colleges in Pennsylvania and its surrounding states. These speakers will lead the discussion as to the reasons war occurs, its outcomes and its wider impacts.

Bus Trip-

A one day bus trip to New York City will be held on Saturday, November 21st to raise money for breast cancer research. The bus will depart from Wegman’s in Wilkes-Barre at 7:30 AM and will leave New York around 7:30 PM. Participants will be free to schedule and arrange their own activities for that day. Tickets are $30. A fundraising auction will be held on the bus en route to the city. All monies raised will go directly to the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research fund. Battle of the Bands-

The Jeff DePrimo Memorial Fund will be sponsoring a Battle of the Garage Bands on October 23 at Club Jam. If you are school or college age and have a band that would be interested in competing, call Craig Hopple at696-5117 for more details. The winner will receive a studio recording session at SI Studios in Old Forge.

Speedy Recovery-

Get well wishes are sent to Al “Ace” Brogna, assistant baseball coach at Pittston Area who is recovering after recent surgery.

Twelfth Night-

The King’s College Theatre Department will continue their tradition of Shakespeare productions by performing one of the Bard’s most famous comedies, “Twelfth Night.” The King’s Players will bring this tale of mistaken identity, practical jokes and chaotic love affairs to local audiences at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30, Oct. 1, 2, 5 and Oct. 6 in the King’s Theatre.

The play begins when Viola disguises herself as a man name Cesario and begins working for Orsino. She falls in love with Orsino, but he is already courting Olivia. What Orsino doesn’t know is that Olivia has fallen for Viola, whom she thinks is really a man. Identities are unraveled as the play comes to a conclusion.

King’s Theatre Department brings a cast of 28 students and alumni to the stage. Cast members include Stephanie Gawlas, Wilkes-Barre (Olivia); Andrew St. Clair, Plains (Sebastian); Jeremey McDougal, Wilkes-Barre (Curio); Sean McKeown, Wilkes-Barre (Sir Toby Belch); DJ Nat, Plains (Feste); Rachel Pompeii, Neversink, N.Y., (Maria); and, Mark Zurek, Mountain Top (Malvolio).
