Brother and sister inducted National Honor Society

Anthony M. Wastella was inducted into the National Honor Society on May 14. His sister Catherine was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society on May 6th.

Anthony graduated from Scranton Prep High School in June. He was the vice-president of the computer club and a member of the Spanish Club. He has been an active member of the Junior Statesman of America. His other accomplishments include a third degree Tang-So-Do Black belt and assistant instructor at the Scranton Karate School. As a freshman he was a member of the football team. Over his high school years, he has become an alumnus of the Junior Ambassadors of America with travel to China, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, and Greece. After graduation, Anthony will be attending the Penn State University Main Campus as a Film Major.

Catherine is currently a High Honors 7th grade student at the St. Clare’s St. Paul Main Campus in Scranton. She is a member of the Junior Leadership Council and attended sessions in Washington D.C. She has been nominated to the Junior High Who’s Who in America. Catherine is a USA Level 8 Gymnast at the United Sports Academy in Dunmore. She recently participated at States in Washington, PA. Her other interests are cross-country running and art.

Anthony and Catherine are the children of Dr. Darlene Ann Dunay and Anthony Wastella of Old Forge. Their grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dunay Jr. of Duryea and Mrs. Stella Wastella and the late Patrick Wastella of Old Forge.

Happy Birthday-

Happy birthday wishes go to Jeff Oliveri of Hughestown who will celebrate on July 27.

New Member-

Brandon K. Pope of West Pittston has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Brandon will be honored during an Induction Convocation this fall on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Membership gives students access to a number of benefits, Membership is by invitation only based on grade point average and class standing. Brandon was also named to the Dean’s list for both the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters. He is the son of Robert Pope, West Pittston and Debbie Tabone, Dunmore.

Dean’s List-

Maria Shiptoski, a 2008 graduate of Berwick High School, has been named to the dean’s list for the Spring 2009 semester at the University of Scranton. She is a rising sophomore majoring in biology with a concentration in pre-medicine.

In addition to achieving dean’s list for both the Fall and Spring semesters, Shiptoski was recently inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Eligibility for acceptance into this academic honor society for the first year students consists of a minimum GPA of 3.5 and placement in the top 20 percent of the freshman class.

She was also accepted into and graduated from the Scranton Emerging Leaders program. She was elected by her peers to serve as the biology club president starting in May 2009 and continuing until her graduation from the university. Additionally she works for the Biology Department and as an active volunteer at VNA Home Health and Hospice.

Shiptoski is the daughter of Carmela Shiptoski of Berwick and the grand-daughter of Marion and John Heycock of Pittston.

The following local residents have been named to the Spring 2009 Dean’s List at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia:

Terrah Cobb of Exeter, a doctor of pharmacy studen; Melissa Pizano of Exeter, a doctor of pharmacy student; Ashley Zielen of Pittston, a doctor of pharmacy student; Erin Chesnavich of Pittston, a biology student; Josh Campbell of Pittston, a doctor of pharmacy student; Annemarie Mazur of Pittston, a doctor of pharmacy student; Marissa Chesnavich of Pittston, a pharmaceutical marketing and management student.

A set of keys were found Thursday, July 16 on the walking track of Martin L. Mattei Middle School. To reclaim the keys, please contact the middle school office at 655-2927.
