D’Elia receives Prudential Volunteer Award

Anthony D’Elia of Pittston, a retired agent from Prudential Financial, recently received Prudential CARES Volunteer Grant Award. The grant program recognizes individual and team volunteers who provide a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer service and are committed to leadership and service in their communities. D’Elia has volunteered with the American Red Cross of Lackawanna County for the past 11 years. In 2008 he devoted more than 600 service hours as an executive board member as well as a committee member including the following service lines; Disaster Action Team, Disaster Service Human Resources, Emergency Services and more.

D’Elia also participated in fundraising programs and served on the auction committee to secure corporate sponsors and donations. The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement, provides relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Dean’s List-

Lia E. Scalzo, Hughestown, has been named to Temple University’s Distinguished Scholar’s List for the Fall Semester. She is a Spanish major with a double minor in Public Health and Latin American Studies. Lia is studying abroad in the spring semester at the Universidad de Oviedo in Spain. She is the daughter of Mike and Jackie Scalzo of Hughestown. Her grandparents are Tony and Ann Berto, Pittston and Cataldo and Christine Scalzo, Hughestown. Lia has a sister, Lauren, an accounting executive with ENK International in New York City.

Snow White-

The Scranton Public Theatre will present its annual production of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale Snow White on Saturday, January 30, at Wyoming Area High School. Show time is 1:00 p.m. The play is an interactive adaptation that includes much audience participation. It is best suited for children ages 3 to 9. Admission price is $5.00 for all ages. Recent Grads-

Dr. Daniel Joseph Piccillo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Piccillo of Franklin Township, graduated from New York Chiropractic College on December 5, 2009. Dr. Piccillo is a 2003 graduate of Dallas High School and a 2007 graduate of Kings College majoring in Biology. Dr. Piccillo has joined the practice of Snyman Chiropractic Group and Associates in Philadelphia.

Anniversary Wishes-

Happy anniversary to Mike and Nora English of Pittston Township. They will celebrate their 45th anniversary on January 30.

A girl was born to Kayla Jenkins and Corey Burns of Duryea on January 11.

A boy was born to Marlina Zangre and Charles Story of Dupont on January 13.

A girl was born to Christine and Edward Duna of Avoca on January 14.

Movies at Miseri-

The Misericordia University Student Activities Department has announced the campus will begin to offer movies in the renovated Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall. The schedule includes “Couples Retreat,” on Jan. 24; “Precious,” on Feb.7; and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” on March 14. All movies will be shown at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Admission is $1 for Misericordia students with ID and $2 for the general public.

Instrumental Concert-

The Wyoming Seminary music department will present the music of Beethoven, Britten, Cimarosa, Gliere, Robert W. Smith and other classical and contemporary composers on Sunday, January 24 during its annual winter instrumental concert.

The concert, titled "A Symphony of Musical Sounds, Timbres and Textures," will begin at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of Wyoming Seminary, 228 Wyoming Avenue, just north of Kingston Corners, and is free and open to the public.

The orchestra, conducted by Anthony J. Kubasek, will perform the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 as well as the "Russian Sailors’s Dance" by Gliere and "Ascension" by Smith.

The string ensemble will present a movement from Benjamin Britten’s "Simple Symphony," and the hand bells, piano trio, flute quartet and other Sem chamber ensembles will present selected works from the classical and contemporary repertoire.

This performance is part of the 2009-10 Performing Arts Series at Wyoming Seminary. For more information call 270-2190.
