Vendors of the Pittston Farmer’s Market will share their produce by awarding harvest baskets to supporters of the market on Tuesday, September l, 2009. Participants will be eligible to sign up for a chance to win the baskets at the market beginning at 10:00 a.m. The drawings will be held at 1:00 p.m. on the same day. Winners need not be at the market for the drawings but will be responsible for pickup of the prizes at the designated stands. Winners will be notified by a telephone call.

Vegetables and fruits freshly harvest are in plentiful demand with tomatoes, corn, carrots, string beans, swiss chard, onions, eggplants, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, parsley, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, cantaloupes, peaches, plums and more. Potato pancakes are available for snacks as well as lemon ice and favorite Amish baked goods.
Canned tomatoes, chili and salsa can be purchased from Bruce Bartuska. New to the market is D& L Farm operated by Donald Fadula from Lake Ariel, PA who in addition to vegetables features maple syrup.
Free parking is available on the upper Tomato Festival lot adjacent to the firehouse. The market is open every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. until the middle of November.

Carmella Calabrese, a 2005 summa cum laude graduate of Wyoming Area, recently graduated summa cum laude from the University of Scranton with a bachelor of science degree in both Chemistry and Mathematics. Enrolled at the University as a Presidential Scholar, Carmella was presented with a Frank O’Hara Award for completing her first year with one of the highest GPA’s in the College of Arts and Sciences. A dean’s list student every semester, Carmella was the co-recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Chemistry Award. She was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Academic Honor Society for Freshman, Pi Mu Epsilon National Honorary Mathematics Society, Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society and the Beta Kappa Chapter of the Chemistry Honor Society Phi Lambda Upsilon, where she served as vice president her junior year and president her senior year. She was a member of Habitat for Humanity, the Mathematics Club and vice president of the Chemistry-Biochemistry Club. Carmella served in the University Ministries as a lector, minister of hospitality, choir member and instrumentalist. She also served on the production staff of the Liva Arts Company’s April 2009 presentation of “Pippin” as musical director and pianist.
A graduate of the University of Scranton’s Honors Program, and mentored by Dr. Trudy Dickneider, Carmella completed her Undergraduate Honors Thesis Research titled “Biomarker Analysis of the K/T Boundary in the Scollard Formation, Alberta, Canada.” She is listed in the 2009 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” and was recently notified that she had one of the top 5 scores on the Major Field Exam for Mathematics.

The annual Jenkins Township Lions Club Ham Dinner will take place on Sunday, September 20 from 12-Noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Jenkins Township Fire Co. hall on Second Street, behind Tony’s Pizza.
Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4 for children. Take-outs will also available.

You may also purchase tickets at the Jenkins Township office (654-3315) located on Main Street, Inkerman during business hours, Monday through Friday.
Shavertown United Methodist Fine Arts Series will present Ken Medema in concert on Sunday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
Medema is a world renowned Christian recording artist, composer, singer and pianist.
Concert tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for youth/children, and may be purchased at the door or by calling 570-675-3616.
The church is located at 163 N. Pioneer Avenue in Shavertown.
