Valley Masonic Lodge annual breakfast today

Valley Masonic Lodge, 318 Linden Street, West Pittston will hold its Semi Annual Pancake & Sausage Breakfast today, October 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Adults $7.00, children under 12 $3.50

Bingo Night

Monday night bingo will be held at the Northmoreland Twp. Vol. Fire Co. on October 12 and 26 at their fire hall on Demunds Road, Centermorland. Doors open at 5 p.m., EB at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments available.

Commended Student-

The principal, John A. Haas, of Pittston Area announced that Allison Welling has been named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Seniors throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.”

Volunteers Needed-

Road to Recovery volunteers are needed. Do you like to drive? Do you like helping others affected by a cancer diagnosis? Then the American Cancer Society, Wyoming Valley Unit, needs you! The schedule is flexible. Most rides are provided Monday through Friday, during the day. You can drive your vehicle or the ACS Van. Orientation and training is provided.

Old Fashioned Breakfast-

An Old Fashioned breakfast will be held on Saturday October 17 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. sponsored by Oneida Lodge 371, I.O.O.F. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Rt. 118 Dallas. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 675-1006.

Everyone is welcome. Building is handicapped accessible.

Coats for Kids Drive-

Highland Manor is sponsoring a "Coat for Kids Drive". They are hoping to reach a goal of 100 coats and they need the communities help. If you are interested in helping out a good cause then please make a donation of a new or gently used coat. They are looking for coats that would fit infants all the way up to teenagers. You could trop off your coats, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the front lobby of Highland Manor. All coats will be distributed on November 1, 2009 to local children in our community. Thank you for your support.

Garage Band Battle-

The Jeff DePrimo Memorial Fund will be sponsoring a Battle of the Garage Bands on October 23 at Club Jam. If you are school or college age and have a band that would be interested in competing, call Craig Hopple at696-5117 for more details.

The winner will receive a studio recording session at SI Studios in Old Forge.

Open House-

Luzerne County Community College will hold an Open House on Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the College’s Campus Center. Information on programs of study and financial aid will be available and tours of the campus will be given.
