Based on the “Called to Holiness Mission: Pastoral Planning in the Diocese of Scranton,” the 108 year old Church of St. Mark, Main Street, Inkerman will close and will consolidate with the Church of St. Maria Goretti (SMG), Laflin Road, Laflin.

Trinity Episcopal Church of West Pittston announced the recipient of the Annual Stewardship Honor. The annual honor is presented to an individual or family who provides a clear, strong witness to the Christian concept of “stewardship as a way of life” offering a consistent, positive, supportive presence by sharing time, talent and treasure for the common good of the local parish, the parish’s mission to live and build holy community and the work of the larger Church. On Sunday, June 28 at 10 a.m. the Closing Ceremony will be a Prayer Service at St. Mark’s conducted by the Reverend Michael J. Kirwin, PhD. Subsequently, a Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by Father Kirwin at 11 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Church. Reverend Edward M. Masakowski, Msgr. Donald A. McAndrews, and Reverend Paul A. McDonnell, O.S.J. will also be present at the services.
A reception will follow in the SMG Banquet Room.
The First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday July 3 at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin.
Father Paul McDonnell will serve as host for vigil. Young adults are most welcome.
Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany and consecration to the Sacred Heart.
Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15 p.m.
The Immanuel Baptist Church, 25 Zerby Avenue, Edwardsville, invites those ages 3 years to 6th grade to vacation bible school, June 22 through 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The theme this year is Studio Go Game Show. There will be bible lessons, games, prizes and other surprises. There will be plenty of snacks to keep us from hunger during our evening challenges. The Annual Forty Fort Community Vacation Bible School will be held Monday June 22 to Friday June 26, each morning from 9 a.m. to noon. The school features teaching from the theme "Experience and Discover God Everywhere."
There are classes for children pre-school to the eighth grade. While pre-registration is not mandatory, it is helpful for planning if parents would call with information of their children’s names and ages.

A Mass of Thanksgiving honoring the Sisters of Christian Charity will be celebrated on June 28, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Assumption Church. A reception will follow in the parish hall. The Sisters of Christian Charity have served the people of Pittston and in particular the people of St. Mary’s Assumption parish since 1877. This present school year marks the end of their formal ministry to the parish community. St. Mary’s Assumption School will continue to serve the children of the greater Pittston Area under lay leadership. All sisters who have served at St. Mary’s Assumption have been invited back to the Mass and Reception. In order to make the proper arrangements, please call the parish office (654-0263) if you plan on attending the Mass and Reception.
All members of the parish community are invited to join the choir for the Mass of Thanksgiving honoring the Sisters of Christian Charity. Rehearsal for the Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the choir loft at St. Mary’s Assumption Church.

The second training session will be held on Monday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Help of Christians Church. Anyone, presently in grades 2 and above, who would like to become an altar server should call the parish office at 654-0263 to register for the training sessions.
Hundreds of migrant farm workers will be making their annual journey to farms in our area this summer. Some have arrived in early May to begin cultivating the crops, with the bulk of the workers arriving in early August to pick the crops. Until September, they will be working long hours in the fields under the hot sun to pick the vegetables and fruits that will eventually be placed on our dinner tables. It is anticipated that women and children will not be living on the farms this year.
To provide for the needs of the men, the Diocese of Scranton is asking parishioners for the following items: Bibles, rosaries and religious items, bath soap and soap case, shaving cream and razor, sunscreen (SPF 15), flip flops/sandals, shampoo, foot powder, deodorant, bath towel/washcloth, paper towels, toothpaste, toothbrush & case, laundry detergents, quilts or blankets, and bathroom tissue. CLOTHING needed: jeans/work pants, sizes 28 – 34, most needed length 30 & 32, S or M, T-shirts, long sleeved shirts-cotton w/ buttons for men, sizes S – L, mostly M, sun protection hats and bandanas, socks – suitable for use in work boots, work gloves safe grip and chemical protection type, size men’s M and men’s briefs, sizes 22-34, mostly medium. We will have containers in the back of each of our churches for this collection. Mary Jo White is coordinating this social outreach project for our parish community.
A Scripture Study of the Acts of the Apostles is continuing through the month of June. Thirty-nine people are participating in the program. There are two sessions each week, one on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and one on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both programs are held in the Religious Education Center at St. Mary, Help of Christians.
On the first Friday of each month Communion is brought to those who are unable to participate in Sunday Mass because of age or health. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with anyone seriously ill, anticipating a serious operation, or quite elderly. Please notify the parish office of anyone desiring these Sacraments, as well as anyone in the hospital or a nursing home.

We are also looking for new volunteers ages 15 and up in all areas to allow new members to offer their most needed help at the bazaar. Congratulations to our young parishioners, Christian Curtis, Brian Stonikinis, Jacob Kozak, John Kozak, Brian Stonikinis and James Ziobro, who recently graduated from Wyoming Area Catholic School. These students attended Sacred Heart School until June 2007.
The Parish Vacation Bible school for children in grades kindergarten through 4th will be held from June 22 to June 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the church hall. Kids will practice the virtue of initiative and are guided each day to find fun, new ways to share the love of Jesus with others. Registration deadline is June 14. The cost is $25.00. The annual parish picnic will take place on July 30 and 31 and August 1. Non-perishable food items and paper products are being sought for the food basket stand. There are collection tubs in the church lobby. Donations are also being taken for the theme baskets, doll stand and the variety stands. You may leave your donations on the rear porch of the rectory with your name. If your item is for a specific stand, please make note of that on the item.

On the fourth Tuesday of every month beginning on June 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. two spiritual directors will lead a program on growing through grief. Each session will be held at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary in Laflin.

St. Mary’s Church Festival Committee will meet Wednesday, June 17 at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s Convent, corner of Hawthorne and Spring Streets. All members are encouraged to attend. Please note the festival publicity photo will be taken at this time.
St. Mary’s Church will hold its annual summer festival Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, July 18 with the festivities beginning at 6 p.m. nightly on the grounds of St. Mary’s School, corner of Hawthorne and Spring Streets.
The festival will open on Thursday evening featuring the music of “Groove Train”. St. Mary’s is also pleased to welcome back “Flaxy Morgan” to entertain picnic attendees on Friday, and local favorites, “The Hometown Boyz”, on Saturday.
As picnic goers sit back and enjoy the live entertainment, they can snack on food items including potato pancakes, pizza fritta, homemade baked goods, chicken cheesesteak hoagies, pizza, and many more of your favorite festival foods!
There will be great games of chance for adults and a grand raffle featuring numerous prizes. There will also be raffles for St. Mary’s famous theme baskets, a basket of cheer, and homemade quilts.
Kids surely will enjoy face painting and the return of the ever-popular Kids Zone featuring many games just for kids.
The parishioners are currently seeking donations for their “Country Kitchen”, famous theme baskets, and other miscellaneous items. If you would like to donate cookies, cakes, brownies, homemade jellies and jams, or your particular specialty bake good to the Country Kitchen, please call Janice Dowdell at 451-0345. SS. Peter and Paul’s Church Youth Group is sponsoring a trip to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game Thursday, July 16. The price is $20 per person and includes an upper reserved level ticket, all-you-can-eat and drink, a game program, a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees baseball cap, and a possible autograph session with the players. Okay kids, are your ready to rock the Crocodile Dock? If you said yes, get ready to take an imaginary trip to the bayou of Louisiana during St. Mary’s Church’s annual Vacation Bible School program. The program will take place August 3-7 at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. They will have great crafts, games, activities, songs, skits, and fun for children ages 3-10. The program will be divided into two camps: pre-school and elementary. Please note the parish is seeking crew and station leaders to work with the children. Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St., and Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., Duryea. Anyone who has been impacted by someone else’s drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship.
