Today is the day for the big Harvest Festival (Dozynki) at Holy Mother of Sorrows Polish National Catholic Church on Wyoming Avenue in Dupont. It will be held on the Church grounds from 10:00 a.m. till dusk.

The Music Ministry of Saint Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 Rock Street, Hughestown, will present its Second Annual Festival of Music which will be held at the church on Sunday, September 20, at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public; a free-will offering will be collected. The program will include a variety of works performed by the church choir, guest soloists Patricia Quinn, Rev. James Breese, and Kristen Vogt, and violinist Alecia Melia. Organists for the event will be Michael Sowa, music director of Saint Peter’s, and Christopher Prestia, guest organist. Pictured are members of Saint Peter’s Music Ministry. There will be live music by the Polka Punch Band.
They will be serving Polish and American foods. Everyone is invited to attend the beautiful and traditional ceremony in Church and then come to the wreath blessing and get your wreath lapel pin, cheese, bread and wine.
There will be games for children and adults and many basket prizes. Also a variety of home baked goods of breads, cakes and many pies.
SS. Peter and Paul’s Church will have their centennial celebration Mass Sunday, Sept. 20 at noon at the church, 1000 Main St., which will be celebrated by the Most Rev. John Dougherty, retired auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Scranton.
The celebration will continue at 3 p.m. with a dinner and live entertainment at the Woodlands Inn and Resort, 1073 Highway 315, Wilkes-Barre. Admission to this event is $50 and includes hors d’oeuvres and a four-course dinner with your choice of chicken or fish as your main entr�e.

St. John’s Primitive Methodist Church will host a Christian rock concert Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the church, 314 Main St., with music provided by the band Choose This Day. In lieu of an admission charge, concertgoers are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, which will benefit the Scranton Rescue Mission. The public is invited to attend and enjoy a night of great music and fellowship.

The Confraternity of Catholic Women of Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville will resume its meetings on Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m. in the church hall. Plans will be finalized for the fall rummage sale to be held in October. Members are asked to attend and discuss plans for future events. The “Catholics Defending Life” prayer team of Scranton will be conducting a 40-day prayer vigil at the Planned Parenthood offices located at 316 Penn. Ave., Scranton, from Sept. 23 to Nov. 1.
During the daily vigil presence outside of Planned Parenthood, prayers will be offered for an end to abortion and for the respect of all human life from conception to natural death.
Vigil hours are planned for the following times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, are to be announced.
An opening Mass for the pro-life vigil will be offered on Wednesday, September 23, at 7 p.m. at nearby St. Peter’s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., celebrated by Passionist Father Ed Buchheit. All faithful are welcome to participate in this peaceful, prayerful apostolate intended to change hearts on the abortion issue. Any time that can be afforded by prayer participants will be appreciated.

The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday October 2 at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin. Father Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome. Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time.
Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15.

Our School of Religious Education will begin on Sunday, September 13. Classes for students in grades 1 – 7 will be held on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. If your child is seeking admission into the Sacramental Preparation Program for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, you should note the following guidelines. The usual grade level for these sacraments is grade two. To be admitted to this program, a child must have already completed one year of religious formation, either in a Religious Education Program, or in Religion class in a Catholic school.
If your child is enrolling in grades 6 or 7, he/she will be beginning an immediate two-year preparation program for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation in the spring of 2011. For those who will be entering 1st grade in September or who may be newly registered in public school, registration packets are available in the back of each of our churches. Father Tom will lead a Scripture Study on the Gospel of St. Luke. There will be two programs, one on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and one on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both programs will be held in the Religious Education Center at St. Mary, Help of Christians. There will be 12 sessions for each program. The Scripture Study combines personal Bible reading and study, faith sharing, lecture and prayer in an informal setting. The program will begin on Tuesday, September 8.
Our annual parish appreciation party is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall.
