A Mass of Thanksgiving honoring the Sisters of Christian Charity will be celebrated on June 28, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Assumption Church. A Reception will follow in the parish hall. The Sisters of Christian Charity have served the people of Pittston and in particular the people of St. Mary’s Assumption parish since 1877. This present school year marks the end of their formal ministry to the parish community. St. Mary’s Assumption School will continue to serve the children of the greater Pittston Area under lay leadership. All sisters who have served at St. Mary’s Assumption have been invited back to the Mass and Reception. In order to make the proper arrangements, please call the parish office (654-0263) if you plan on attending the Mass and Reception.

All members of the parish community are invited to join the choir for the Mass of Thanksgiving honoring the Sisters of Christian Charity. Rehearsal for the Mass will be held this Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the choir loft at St. Mary’s Assumption Church.

The ministry schedule for July through September 2009 will be mailed to our liturgical ministers this coming week and will be posted on the parish webpage. If for some reason you are not able to cover your assignments, please make arrangements for a substitute or call the parish office. Please know how grateful we are for your ministry in our parish community.

Hundreds of migrant farm workers will be making their annual journey to farms in our area this summer. Some have arrived in early May to begin cultivating the crops, with the bulk of the workers arriving in early August to pick the crops. Until September, they will be working long hours in the fields under the hot sun to pick the vegetables and fruits that will eventually be placed on our dinner tables. It is anticipated that women and children will not be living on the farms this year. To provide for the needs of the men, the Diocese of Scranton is asking parishioners for the following items: Bibles, rosaries and religious items, bath soap and soap case, shaving cream and razor, sunscreen (SPF 15), flip flops/sandals, shampoo, foot powder, deodorant, bath towel/washcloth, paper towels, toothpaste, toothbrush & case, laundry detergents, quilts or blankets, and bathroom tissue. CLOTHING needed: jeans/work pants, sizes 28 – 34, most needed length 30 & 32, S or M, T-shirts, long sleeved shirts-cotton w/ buttons for men, sizes S – L, mostly M, sun protection hats and bandanas, socks – suitable for use in work boots, work gloves safe grip and chemical protection type, size men’s M and men’s briefs, sizes 22-34, mostly medium. We will have containers in the back of each of our churches for this collection. Mary Jo White is coordinating this social outreach project for our parish community.

A Scripture Study of the Acts of the Apostles is continuing through the month of June. Thirty-nine people are participating in the program. There are two sessions each week, one on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and one on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both programs are held in the Religious Education Center at St. Mary, Help of Christians.

On the first Friday of each month Communion is brought to those who are unable to participate in Sunday Mass because of age or health. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with anyone seriously ill, anticipating a serious operation, or quite elderly. Please notify the parish office of anyone desiring these Sacraments, as well as anyone in the hospital or a nursing home.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Assumption Annex. For further information, call Mary Boylan (654-0529).
