St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Pittston, 13th annual flea market and ziti dinner continues today, Sunday, August 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is one of the largest, cleanest, well-known indoor flea markets in the area that attracts people from all over the valley. There will be an array of flea market items such as jewelry, household needs, books, Christmas, small furniture, toys, and other every day needs.

Ethnic food such as pirohi, piggies, haluski as well as the all American hot dog will be available, along with coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

Concert Next Sunday

A benefit Concert featuring Bob White will be held at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 317 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston on Sunday, August 16 at 7 p.m. White who is the lead singer for the band, 3rd Degree, began his singing career with his sister and brothers, who competed in local, regional and statewide Sunday School music competitions as The White Family, winning awards at every level of competition.

The concert will be for the benefit of White’s daughter Ashley, who is raising support to sing with her college choral group touring Europe in 2010. Ashley is a student at Nyack College in Nyack, New York, majoring in music missions. The concert is open to the general public. An offering for Ashley’s support will be received during the concert. Chicken Barbecue

St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, corner of Winter and Church streets in Old Forge, is sponsoring a chicken barbecue on Saturday, August 22 from noon until 3 p.m.

A new Senior Citizens group for our area, known as the "St. Joseph’s Senior Social Club" has formed and held their first meeting last Wednesday. They will meet every second Wednesday of the month, beginning this week on Aug. 12, at 2:00 p.m. The group is open to all senior citizens of the area looking to meet new friends and plan social activities. Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Our Lady of Mt and Carmel and St. Rocco’s parishes announce the beginning of a joint program for 2009-2010 for all our parish children grades K-6. To ensure that your children are enrolled in our joint program and that their religious instruction will properly prepare them to receive the Sacraments and to become full members of our church, we ask you to fill out the registration form and return it your parish no later than August 28. Please submit anew form for each child. The Religious Education program is tentatively scheduled to begin on September 9 and 10. Classes will be held on Wednesdays for grades K, 1, 2, and 3 and on Thursdays for grades 4, 5, and 6. We will be utilizing classrooms at both Mt. Carmel and St. Rocco’s. There will be a parent/guardian meeting for all CCD participants to go over the program requirements and scheduling.

We are in need of at least seven new teachers/aides before the year can begin. If you are interested call Father Dan as soon as possible.

Then we will sail to Greece, Egypt, Israel (Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth and Galilee), Sicily and Naples. We will return to Rome for two days and then fly home. All ship cabins have balconies. The mass schedule for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary is Friday, August 14 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 15 at 9:00 a.m. The Feast of the Assumption is regarded as a harvest celebration. Everyone is invited to bring flowers, fruit and vegetables for a special blessing at the Feast Day masses as well as the three regular weekend masses.

The members of the Women’s Society will recite the rosary before the 4:00 p.m. mass on August 15. Members are to meet in the lobby of the church. They will attend mass and then receive as a group.

However, to honor the Blessed Mother at St. Anthony’s Church Masses will be celebrated on Friday at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday at 7:00 & 11:00 a.m..

Saturday, August 15 is the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven. Because the Holy Day falls on Saturday it is not considered a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in the Chapel for those who would like to celebrate the feast.

Registration for religious education will be held in the auditorium of Seton Catholic for two weeks immediately after the 10 a.m. Mass, Sunday, August 16 and Sunday, August 23. The Diocese of Scranton will sponsor a seminar on Tuesday, August 18 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s School Auditorium, Avoca. Sr. Jane O’Donnell, RSM will present the seminar and discuss the feelings of grief, loss and change due to parish restructuring.

Kitchen help volunteers are needed on Monday August 10 through August 15 to help with preparations for the bazaar. Volunteers are also needed for the many booths at the bazaar. Please call the parish office if you can help.
