Mother’s Day concert at West Pittston church

The Jacobs Brothers will appear for a concert on Mothers’ Day evening, Sunday May 10, at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church of West Pittston. The show starts at 7 p.m. and all are invited to attend free of charge.

Father Richard J. Cirba recently presented three of his parishioners with the Diocese of Scranton 2009 Bishop’s Youth Award. Nominees for this award met service ministry criteria that involved dedicated parish service and participation which is a testament to their faither and Christian living. Shown in the photo with Father Cirba are this year’s award recipients from left to right: Andrew Tressa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Tressa, Thomas Kuren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kuren, Rev. The group has performed for more than 20 years, doing traditional and contemporary gospel music with a good sprinkling of down home comedy thrown in.

Doo Wop Bus Trip

The United Methodist Church of Pittston is sponsoring a bus trip on Saturday, August 1 to the American Music Theater in Lancaster to see "The Summer Doo Wop Cavalade Show." After the show, the bus will stop at Shady Maple Restaurant for a Smorgasbord Dinner. Cost of trip is $88 includes bus seat, show ticket and dinner.

Young Adult Group

Festa Di San Cataldo Picnic

The San Cataldo Society of Pittston will honor St. Cataldo with a mass at St. Rocco’s church, on Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. This year’s picnic will begin at 2 p.m. that same day – location: Francis Slocum State Park, Pavilion #2. CCW Breakfast

The Confraternity of Catholic Women of Holy Trinity Parish, Swoyersville will hold their annual May Breakfast on Sunday, May 17 in the school cafeteria. The women are asked to assemble in the church hall by 8:15 a.m. to attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass which will be celebrated by their pastor and moderator Father Richard Cirba. After mass the women will proceed to the school cafeteria where breakfast will be prepared and served by the Holy Name Society members of the parish. Crowning of Blessed Mother statue by a member will take place at the breakfast. Reservation deadline is May 10th. An invitation is extended to all women of the parish, friends and family members of the Confraternity. Door prizes will be accepted the morning of the breakfast. Father Tom leads a Scripture Study of the Acts of the Apostles, that began on Tuesday April 28. There will be two programs, one on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and one on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both programs will be held in the Religious Education Center at St. Mary, Help of Christians. There will be 10 sessions for each program. The Scripture Study combines personal Bible reading and study, faith sharing, lecture and prayer in an informal setting. Come and join us and learn to make the real connection between your faith and your everyday life! In order to be able to order the necessary materials, we ask that you call the parish office (654-0263) to register.

On the first Friday of each month Communion is brought to those who are unable to participate in Sunday Mass because of age or health. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with anyone seriously ill, anticipating a serious operation, or quite elderly.

Annual Golf Tournament registration is open for the 15th annual Mt. Carmel Golf Tournament to be held June 14 at Edgewood in the Pines Golf Course in Drums. Religious Education Program Monday afternoon for students of Wyoming Area School. Students from other schools and Kindergarten children are attending classes on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is the last class of the school year. On Sunday, May 24, all Students, First Holy Communion Children, Sodality Members and all their families are urged to attend the 10:30 a.m. Mass. During the Mass the High School Senior Students will crown the Blessed Mother. This Mass will be the conclusion of the Religious Education school year 2008-2009.

It will be held June 22 through 26 from 9 a.m. to Noon at St. Mary Help of Christians Church for children entering kindergarten through grade 5. Older children can attend as group leaders and site helpers. Adult volunteers are needed to provide a faith filled fun filled week of activities. Adults serve as site directors and assistants for Bible story time, arts and crafts, games and Catholic Treasures. Our Cash Club will begin again on July 1, and continue until June 30, 2010. The tickets were mailed a few days ago. Please purchase the ticket mailed to you and sell a ticket or two to a friend. There are 365 chances to win. This fund raiser raises approximately $20,000 per year for the church. If you cannot purchase your ticket please return it to us so that we can sell it.

Youth Ministry St. Maria Goretti/St. Marks

There isn’t a youth ministry at present, not for high school students anyway. If you are an adult, young adult, or teen then the time to network is now. Teams of Youth Groups from the area have joined together and are sponsoring their second annual Light The Fire Youth Rally at College Misericordia on June 16.

They will host a variety of workshops, holy hour, gifted speaker and songwriter, games and activities from 10 a.m. to 7p.m. St. Maria Goretti/St. Mark’s will pay the $20.00 registration fee for everyone who wants to attend from our parishes. The time to establish a youth ministry is now. Call our secretary Mary Ann Schmitt at 655-8956 to register.

We’ll call a short meeting of those interested to discuss youth ministry as we learn how God wants to use us to serve him.

The Sisters of Mercy will provide tutorial service at Mercy Center in Dallas of the campus of Misericordia University for students in grades K-8. Classes will be held on a one to one bases. Individualized instruction in the areas of Reading, math, English and Study Skills. Junior Girl Scout Troop 4829 of St. Maria Goretti Church is working on their Bronze Award and have chosen a blood drive as their project. The American Red Cross will be present on Sunday, May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church hall.

As part of his requirement toward the rank of Eagle Scout, Louis Galli-Daveski a Life Scout of Troop 485, St. Maria Goretti church will be painting the foot bridge that connects the playground and baseball field. He along with a group of scouts and community volunteers, will scrape, sand and paint the bridge on May 9.

Louis will be in the hall after each mass this weekend to collect any contribution towards this project and to discuss his project with you.

The Scranton Chapter of Pennsylvanians for Human Life will have Mother’s Day carnation sale May 9 and 10 following all of the weekend Masses at St. Mary’s Church. This project, which is the chapter’s major fundraiser of the year, will honor mothers and focus awareness on the dignity and value of human life, as well as raise funds to continue the chapter’s pro-life work.

The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Church will have a parish Communion brunch Sunday, May 17 in St. Mary’s School auditorium, 742 Spring St., following the 11 a.m. Mass. Pennsylvania State Secretary Maureen Lavelle is interested in starting a division in Avoca and/or Pittston. Membership is open to women who are at least 16 years old, practicing Roman Catholics, and are Irish by birth, decent, or legal adoption or are a wife or mother of a Hibernian or a member of a religious order.
