On Saturday, February 27, Cardinal Justin Rigali will make his pastoral visit to the Greater Pittston Area. The cardinal will be the principal celebrant for the 4:30 p.m. Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church. Joe Holden, director of music at St. John’s is in the process of forming a multi-parish choir to provide music leadership for the liturgical celebration. Rehearsals for the liturgy will be held on Sunday evenings at 6:15 p.m. in the choir loft at St. John’s. The rehearsals began on Sunday, January 31 and run through Sunday, February 21. There will be NO rehearsal on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7.

The annual parish retreat begins February 13 in preparation to enter the season of Lent. The retreat will begin with 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, February 13 and conclude on Ash Wednesday, February 17.
All parents anticipating the Baptism of their first child must attend baptismal instruction before scheduling the baptism. The next session will be held Tuesday, April 6, in the parish center from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Winter night at the races Saturday, Feb. 20 in St. Mary’s School auditorium, 742 Spring St. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the races begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 which includes all you can eat and drink the entire night. Horses are $10 each.
Racing forms can be obtained at St. Mary’s Church following the weekend Masses (Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 8 and 11:30 a.m.) or by calling the rectory at 457-3412. The sponsor of the winning horse will win $50 and does not need to be present to win.
Social concerns committee will collect food for the needy throughout the year. Food donations can be placed in the collection containers located in either church. Monetary donations can be made by placing the gift in an envelope marked “food bank” and dropping it in the collection basket at any weekend Mass.

Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, no longer meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St., due to lack of attendance. However meetings will continue Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., Duryea. Anyone who has been impacted by someone else’s drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship.
