On Sunday November 8, the local community will come together to help celebrate the 55th Ordination Anniversary of Rev. Robert F. Sauers.

The Church of St. Maria Goretti, Laflin Road, is having their Homemade Pasta and Sausage Dinner on Sunday, November 8 from noon to 5 p.m. in their banquet room. Pictured are some of our volunteers, from left to right, are John Golden, Carol Fisher, Robin Long, Robin Kutney, Nancy Ratajczak. Dinner includes salad, bread/butter, beverage and dessert. Take-outs are available from noon to 4 p.m. Containers will be provided. Tickets are available at the door and the cost is $8.50 for adults. Children 5 and under are free. Rev. Sauers was ordained in 1954 after serving in the U.S. Navy and attending college. In 1956 Rev. Sauers became the pastor at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hughestown and remained there for the next 36 years. During that time, he also served the local community in many ways.
Rev. Sauers is a member and past president of the Pittston Rotary Club. In 1990 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor given by the Rotary International. Rev. Sauers also served as a past president of the Lutheran Welfare Service of NEPA. He has served on the board of the former Pittston Hospital, the advisory board of Northeastern Pennsylvania Blue Cross and has been involved with the Hughestown Park Recreation Committee and Hughestown Fire Department.
After his retirement from St. Peter’s, Rev. Sauers served as a supply pastor for many years and is currently the part-time pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre.
The celebration will be held on Sunday, November 8 at Colarusso’s La Palazzo, Birney Avenue in Moosic. It will begin with a cocktail hour starting at 3 p.m. with dinner and a ceremony to follow. The First United Presbyterian Church of West Pittston, 115 Exeter Ave., West Pittston, will be holding their 2nd Annual Craft and Gift Fair on November 14. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This multi-level event will be host to dozens of vendors, selling a large variety of goods, including jewelry, art glass, crocheted baby items, homemade purses and lotions, and well name brands such as Lia Sophia, and Mary Kay. The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed expresses our faith in the unity of all members of the Church including those who are no longer among the living. The Oblates of St. Joseph Lay Cooperator Society will hold its meeting on Wednesday, November 4, at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary, Route 315 in Pittston.

The Annual Chicken Dinner at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter will be held on Sunday, November 1, with take-outs available from 11:00 a.m. to noon and sit-down dining from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Adult dinners are $8.00. The next monthly Blue Army Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday, November 6 at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin. Father Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome. Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard.
Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15.
The Ladies of Charity, Diocese of Scranton, have scheduled their annual Day of Recollection for Saturday, November 7 at the King’s College Chapel. The doors will be open at 9:30 a.m. and will begin with a message from Rev. Gregory Loughney at 10 a.m.
This will be followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation for those who wish, or a time of silence. They will then celebrate the Eucharist with Msgr. Kelly. A lovely luncheon will be served on the 3rd floor of the Sheeny/Farmer Campus Center Building of King’s College, and an elevator is available. The cost for the luncheon is $17. This weekend the church celebrates the Feast of All Saints. Since the holy day falls on a Sunday this year, the Mass schedule will be the normal weekend schedule. Monday, November 2 is the Feast of All Souls, this Mass will be celebrated at 7 and 8 a.m. in the Chapel.
Parishioners are invited to provide a photo of deceased family members or friends who died this past year and whose funeral Mass was celebrated at the parish. Please place their photo in the basket found at the main doors of the church by Sunday November 1. All photos should be a copy and not the original. Photos should be no larger than 5 x 7.
Fall and Holiday Craft show ill be held Saturday, November 7 to benefit the Greater Pittston Food Pantry, in the Seton Gym from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free. Door prizes and raffles will be available. If interested in renting a space call Jackie at 655-9853.

Mr. Robert Brideau has singularly carried on for years the work of propagating devotion to St. Maria Goretti through the publication of a novena booklet and holy cards as well as encouraging enrollment in a prayer guild. He has presided over this work from his home in Ontario, Canada and funded much of the work on his own. For many years he traveled to Laflin with a delegation of devotees and friends for the Feast Day of Maria Goretti. He has reached out to us as parishioners of St. Maria Goretti Shrine to take over his work. There will be a meeting of any person interested in assisting us with the Novena Apostolate on November 14, Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. in the parish office.

Food donations can be left in the boxes in either of the church vestibules. Monetary gifts can be given to the food bank by placing a gift in an envelope marked food bank and dropping it in the collection basket at any weekend Mass.
