Roast beef dinner today at St. Michael’s | The Pittston Dispatch, Pittston, PA

St. Michael’s the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, Pittston, will celebrate its feast day with a roast beef dinner today, Sunday, November 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the church hall, 205 North Main Street, Pittston.

The dinner will consist of roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, coffee, tea or soft drink and cake for dessert. Cost of the dinner is Adults $8 and children $6 under 10.

Take-outs will be available any time during the dinner hours. In conjunction with the dinner, a raffle with many prizes will be held.

Blue Army Vigil

The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate heart of Mary will be held Friday, December 4 at St. Joseph’s Oblates Seminary in Laflin. Fr. Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome.

Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany, and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15 p.m.

Catholic Young Adults

Next meeting of the Catholic Young Adult Group, for ages 18-39, is November 18 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 241 William St., Pittston in the meeting room of the parish center.

Pastie Sale

The First United Methodist Church of West Pittston will hold a pastie sale on Thursday, November 19. Pasties offered are meat with or without onions; vegetable with cheese; sausage and pepper. Gifts of A Different Nature LLC will host a party on November 19 at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson Street, Duryea. The church hall is located beneath the church. Parking located on side of the church. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Thanksgiving Dinner

On Wednesday, November 25, the First Baptist Church of Pittston would like to invite the homeless and all those who are unable to afford a holiday meal to a free Thanksgiving Dinner. The dinner will include turkey and all the trimmings, along with dessert. The church is located on Water Street in Pittston and dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is the intent of the church to provide a hot meal to all those in need, including the homeless and those who can’t afford to purchase food for a holiday meal. Christmas Party

The Confraternity of Catholic Women of Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville will hold its Christmas Party on Sunday, December 13 promptly at 1 p.m. in the church hall. Wafers (Oplatky) will be shared among the guests and dinner will be served. The dinner is being catered by Anne Voitek Catering, West Wyoming. The members will attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 6th which will be offered for their intentions and are asked to meet at 8:15 a.m. in the church hall and process in a group to the Mass. Karle is spiritual moderator of the group. The Confraternity will meet on Sunday, November 22nd at 2 p.m. in the church hall to finalize plans for the party. Christmas Craft Fair

The Christian Education Committee of the First Presbyterian Church, 97 South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre is planning its 15th annual Alternative Christmas Craft Fair for Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the church.

The Alternative Christmas Craft Fair offers families an opportunity to spend time together, making items such as wreaths, and purchasing hand-made crafts from local artisans, as well as third world crafts made in locations around the world. The Women of the First Presbyterian Church will also be having a bake sale. A light lunch will be available.

The Holy Rosary School PTO will host their annual Toyland Bingo on Friday, December 11 at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium. Toyland Bingo is a very important annual fundraising event. Proceeds from the event benefit the educational needs of our students.

The Cluster 10 Implementation Team met on Monday, November 9, 2009, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish center. The lay representatives of Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Mary, Help of Christians, St. John the Evangelist, St. Mary’s Assumption, and St. Rocco’s, along with Msgr. Bendik, Father Jackson, Father Maloney, Father McDonnell, and Father Schwebs met with Father John Polednak, the Episcopal Vicar for our region. At the meeting a recommendation was made, seconded and unanimously approved to take up a second collection at all Masses on the weekend of November 21/22. All monies collected will be donated to the Greater Pittston Area Food Pantry which is housed in the Seton Catholic building. At this time, approximately 55 families per week are being assisted through this cluster ministry. We ask that you consider donating to this collection. All checks should be made to the Greater Pittston Area Food Pantry.

On Sunday, November 22, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Assumption, parishioner Timothy Wachs will be installed as a Eucharistic Minister. Sister Mary Beth Makuch, SS.C.M., Director of Ministry to Persons with Disabilities will be present to sign the Mass.

There will be a charismatic prayer group meeting Monday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s School auditorium. The public is invited to attend.

St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches’ youth club will participate on in the parish’s annual Thanksgiving Day Mass November 26 at 9 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, 1000 Main St.

The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church are currently selling the stocking stuffer edition of their Pot of Gold Match the Daily Number raffle tickets. Tickets are $10 each.

St. Rocco’s

The Fides Club will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, on Sunday, November 22 at the 11 a.m. Mass at St. Rocco’s Church, followed by a family breakfast in the school auditorium. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased by any member or at St. Rocco’s Rectory, by calling 654-2914.

Members are urged to attend a meeting on Tuesday, November 17 at 7 p.m. in the church classrooms to make a final arrangements for the breakfast.

The annual mass of remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 22 at 3 p.m. in St. Rocco’s Church.

St. Rocco’s Christian Mothers will meet on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. in the church for a Thanksgiving prayer service.

The members will attend the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, November 21, which will be for the deceased members of the society.

St. Rocco’s Brownie Troop 3707 will be holding their first annual food drive on Thursday, November 19. Please help feed the hungry and help teach our girls the spirit of giving by dropping off your food donations to the church basement on Thursday, November 19 between 6:30 and 8 p.m.
