St. Michael’s the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, Pittston, will celebrate its feast day with a roast beef dinner today, Sunday, November 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the church hall, 205 North Main Street, Pittston.

The winner of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church bazaar 2009 auto raffle is Robert Price of Dupont, who opted for the $20,000 cash prize. The dinner will consist of roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, coffee, tea or soft drink and cake for dessert. Cost of the dinner is Adults $8 and children $6 under 10.
Take-outs will be available any time during the dinner hours. In conjunction with the dinner, a raffle with many prizes will be held.
The public is invited to attend.
The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate heart of Mary will be held Friday, December 4 at St. Joseph’s Oblates Seminary in Laflin. Fr. Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome.
Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany, and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15 p.m.
Next meeting of the Catholic Young Adult Group, for ages 18-39, is November 18 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 241 William St., Pittston in the meeting room of the parish center.
Join other young adults who seek to grow in their faith discuss current events and participate in social outreach activities.
Meetings are held every First and Third Wednesday of the month.

On Wednesday, November 25, the First Baptist Church of Pittston would like to invite the homeless and all those who are unable to afford a holiday meal to a free Thanksgiving Dinner. The dinner will include turkey and all the trimmings, along with dessert. The church is located on Water Street in Pittston and dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is the intent of the church to provide a hot meal to all those in need, including the homeless and those who can’t afford to purchase food for a holiday meal. The Confraternity of Catholic Women of Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville will hold its Christmas Party on Sunday, December 13 promptly at 1 p.m. in the church hall. Wafers (Oplatky) will be shared among the guests and dinner will be served. The dinner is being catered by Anne Voitek Catering, West Wyoming. The Christian Education Committee of the First Presbyterian Church, 97 South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre is planning its 15th annual Alternative Christmas Craft Fair for Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the church.
The Alternative Christmas Craft Fair offers families an opportunity to spend time together, making items such as wreaths, and purchasing hand-made crafts from local artisans, as well as third world crafts made in locations around the world. The Women of the First Presbyterian Church will also be having a bake sale. A light lunch will be available.

Today, November 15, at the 11:30 a.m. Mass, we will celebrate a Rite of Enrollment for the children from our parish community who are preparing for the celebration of First Penance.
Monday, November 16, we will celebrate our annual Mass of Remembrance. The Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary, Help of Christians Church. We will remember in a special way all those members of our parish community who have been taken into the loving arms of our God during this past year. A light reception will follow in the parish hall.
The Cluster 10 Implementation Team met on Monday, November 9, 2009, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish center. The lay representatives of Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Mary, Help of Christians, St. John the Evangelist, St. Mary’s Assumption, and St. Rocco’s, along with Msgr. Bendik, Father Jackson, Father Maloney, Father McDonnell, and Father Schwebs met with Father John Polednak, the Episcopal Vicar for our region. At the meeting a recommendation was made, seconded and unanimously approved to take up a second collection at all Masses on the weekend of November 21/22. All monies collected will be donated to the Greater Pittston Area Food Pantry which is housed in the Seton Catholic building. At this time, approximately 55 families per week are being assisted through this cluster ministry. We ask that you consider donating to this collection. All checks should be made to the Greater Pittston Area Food Pantry.
On Sunday, November 22, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Assumption, parishioner Timothy Wachs will be installed as a Eucharistic Minister. Sister Mary Beth Makuch, SS.C.M., Director of Ministry to Persons with Disabilities will be present to sign the Mass.

Mt. Carmel Parish will observe its annual day of Eucharistic Adoration in honor of Christ the King on Sunday, November 22 after the 11:15 a.m. Mass and will continue throughout the afternoon until 5 p.m. At 5 p.m. we will have a celebration of Vespers and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

All parishioners are invited to our special Thanksgiving Liturgy to be held this Thanksgiving Day at 9 a.m. in the upper Church. Please note, this will be the only Mass celebrated on Thanksgiving Day.
The Care and Concern Committee will once again sponsor Thanksgiving Food Baskets for the needy of our area. A second collection will be taken next weekend, November 21 – 22 in support of this outreach.
The Health Clinic is open every Wednesday and is free of charge. Registration is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the former Seton Catholic High School and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
If you or someone you know is in need of food, please call the Greater Pittston Food Pantry at 654-9923. Distribution of food is by appointment only.
The Greater Pittston Kid’s Closet is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Kid’s Closet accepts donation of new or “gently used” clothing for children (sizes newborn to size 16).

The Altar and Rosary Society will hold its Annual Christmas Party on Sunday, December 6 in the Church Hall, beginning at 2 p.m. The cost is $17 per person plus $5 donation for the needy. Those who attend are asked to bring a $5 door prize. Entertainment will be provided by Kay Thorton. Please call the Parish Office by Wednesday, November 25 to make your reservation.
A Rummage Sale will be held on Saturday, November 21 at the former St. John the Baptist Gym, from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Chairs, tables, lights, dishware, and a variety of other household items will be available.
