The Women’s Association of the First United Presbyterian Church, corner of Exeter Avenue and Warren Street, West Pittston will hold its Annual Rummage Sale, Saturday, October 3 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the church dining room. “Bag Day’ will be at 1 p.m.

On Sunday, October 4 at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Second Presbyterian Church, Parsonage Street, Pittston, a covered dish supper will be held in honoring the Rev. David Brague and his family celebrating 5 years of ministry at this location. Pastor Brague is shown with his son, Nathanael, wife, Michele and daughter, Lauren. This event is being coordinated by the Session, Board of Deacons and the original Pulpit Nominating Committee. Everyone attending is asked to bring a non-perishable food item which will be donated to the West Pittston Methodist Church Food Bank. The First United Methodist Church of West Pittston will be holding a homemade pizza sale on Friday, October 2. Pizzas can be ordered baked or unbaked, with or without onions. Also with sweet red pepper topping for an additional $1.50. Pick up will be Friday, October 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. Cost for a tray of pizza is $10. Half a tray of pizza is $5.50. The Oblates of St. Joseph Lay Cooperator Society will hold its meeting on Wednesday, October 7, at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary, Route 315 in Pittston.
The meeting will follow the 7:00 p.m. Novena to St. Joseph and St. Joseph Marello.
The lay society welcomes anyone who would like to support the local Oblate priests in their spiritual and apostolic work.
The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday October 2 at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin. Father Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome. Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15.
The Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter on Friday and Saturday, October 2 and 3. Masses will be celebrated on Friday at 7:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., on Saturday at 7:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
And open closet will be held at Hope Church on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Children, teen and adult apparel will be available with no charge for anything.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Pittston, will host their annual Nite at the Races on Saturday, October 10, in their parish center banquet hall located on William Street, Pittston. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., races begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $9 per adult. No one under 21 years of age admitted.
Plenty of food, beverages and door prizes will be available throughout the evening. Special cash prizes will be raffled off during the evening. If anyone is interested in purchasing a horse at a cost of 410 each, you may call the rectory office during office hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 654-6902 or pick up a form at the entrances of the church/parish center. Classes begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and conclude promptly at 7:00 p.m. All students will be dismissed to the courtyard between the church and the school for parent pickup. Each student needs a tablet, pencil and crayons for class.

The Diocese of Scranton will observe Respect Life Sunday with the celebration of Mass on Sunday, October 4 at 2:15 p.m. in St. Peter’s Cathedral. Retired Auxiliary Bishop John M. Dougherty will be the principal celebrant for this special liturgy which highlights the Catholic Church’s respect for the sanctity and dignity of life spanning all stages and conditions, from conception to natural death. Parishioners from around the diocese are welcome to attend. The liturgy will also be broadcast live by Catholic Television.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated every Saturday from 3:30 until 4:15 p.m. and on the first Sunday of each month from 9:15 until 9:30 a.m. Parishioners may also make an appointment to celebrate the Sacrament. Come and celebrate the Lord’s great love and mercy!

Because of the current economic difficulties and the delay in a state budget, many organizations that provide community services are in desperate need of your resistance to continue to reach out to the poor and needy. The Greater Pittston Food Pantry is one of those organizations that is in need of your assistance. Over the first several weeks, the Food Pantry has provided food for over 50 families each week! The need is tremendous and your help is desperately needed. If you would like to donate non-perishable food items (soups, canned fruits or vegetables, tuna, pasta, cereal, dry milk, rice, etc.) you can drop them off at the Parish Office, Monday through Friday. Thank you for your assistance and generosity as we follow the Lord’s command to care for the poor and marginalized.
If you need assistance with food, please call the Food Pantry at 654-9923. Distribution of food is by appointment only.
The Care and Concern Committee will once again sponsor Thanksgiving Food Baskets for the poor and needy. Over the next several weeks a variety of items will be collected. Over the week of September 28th we will be collecting cereals. Food items can be brought to the Church on Monday or dropped off at the Parish Office Monday through Friday during business hours.
The Greater Pittston Kid’s Closet is open on Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays 11 – 2 p.m. and 5 – 7 p.m. The Kid’s Closet accepts donations of new or “gently used” clothing for children (sizes newborn to size 16). Unfortunately, adult clothing is not accepted. Donations may be dropped off at the Kid’s Closet, located in the former Seton Catholic School or at the Parish Office.
If you are looking for help coping with the recent loss of a loved one, consider joining St. John the Evangelist’s Bereavement Support Group on Tuesday evenings from 7 til 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Dining Room. For more information, please call the Parish Office.
The Catholic Choral Society invites you to join them as they begin their 61st season this autumn. Practices are held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the IHM Center at Marywood University. Confirmation Classes will be held this Sunday, September 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. Children will meet in the Church Hall with their teachers. The date for Confirmation is April 25th and Bishop James Timlin will be the celebrant.
Beginning Sunday, October 4 a Coffee Hour will be held every Sunday following the 10 a.m. Mass in the Church Hall. Parishioners are needed for hosting the Coffee Hour. This year’s Annual Chicken Dinner will be held on Sunday, October 11th in Seton Catholic Auditorium. Tickets are $8.50 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Take-outs are $8.50 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Take-outs are available from 11 until noon. Dinners will be served from noon until 3:30 p.m.
The Altar and Rosary will hold its Annual Card Party on Sunday, October 18th at 2 p.m. in Seton Catholic Auditorium. There will be many wonderful door prizes and at least ten special awards. Bring your spouse and friends and enjoy a fun and relaxing afternoon!
The annual blessing of the animals to commemorate the Feast of St. Frances of Assisi will be held Sunday, October 4th at 1:15 p.m. in the courtyard of the church. All parishioners are invited to bring their pets for this special blessing.

There will be a brief Children’s Choir interest/informational meeting on Sunday, October 11 immediately following the 11 a.m. mass. All children ages 6-13 who would like to join are asked to attend the meeting with a parent or guardian. (Anyone 14 and older is welcome to join the St. Maria Goretti Adult Choir, which rehearses on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the church.) The Children’s Choir will begin singing as part of the upcoming Christmas Concert in December. There will be a Halloween Dance on Saturday, October 24 in our Parish Center. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Dancing 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by two bands: GTO and HAT TRYK. Cost is $20 per person. Proceeds will benefit St. Maria Goretti Parish. Reservation deadline is 10/18/09. Must be 21 years or older to attend. Costumes are recommended but not mandatory. The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi falls next Sunday (Oct. 4) Blessing of the Animals will take place at the door of the church at 12:30 p.m.
We need a few extra hostesses for the Harvest Tea to be held on Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center. Father Paisley, with his group, will entertain. St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches will have a commissioning ceremony of its CCD teachers today during the 10 a.m. Mass at SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, 1000 Main St. Please note the First Holy Communion class will not meet today.
St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Youth Club will have a baby shower during October in honor of Respect Life month. During the month, they will collect new and next to new baby items, clothes, and blankets as well as baby food, formula, diapers, and other baby items. Donations can be placed in the collection containers in the vestibules of St. Mary’s and SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches. All proceeds will benefit the Pennsylvanians for Human Life and the Care and Concern Free Health Clinic located in the former Seton Catholic High School, Pittston.

The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church are currently selling the harvest edition of their Pot of Gold Match the Daily Number raffle tickets. Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St., and Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., Duryea. The Music Ministry of Saint Peter’s along with musicians from the community will present the church’s Second Annual Festival of Music. The program will include a well-rounded variety of selections that will be sure to please everyone, featuring traditional and gospel hymns for congregational singing and selections performed by the church choir, soprano soloist Patricia Quinn of Wyoming, mezzo-soprano soloist Kristen Vogt of Slatington, and baritone soloist Rev. James Breese, pastor of First Baptist Church, Pittston.
The program will also feature violinist Alecia Melia of Rockaway, NJ. Michael Sowa is organist and music director at Saint Peter’s. He will be assisted by guest organist, Christopher Prestia, of Wantage, NJ. Melia, Prestia, Sowa, and Vogt are undergraduate students in Marywood University’s music department.

The Feast of the Mother of the Rosary will be held on Sunday October 4 beginning with a Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Rocco’s A procession through the Browntown section of the city will start at 3 p.m. Members of all societies, altar servers and parishioners and friends of St. Rocco’s Church will attend this yearly tradition.
St. Rocco’s Novenas are every Tuesday evening preceding 7 p.m. Mass.
St. Rocco’s senior choir resumes practice on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. after the Mass. The choir sings every Sunday at the 11 a.m. Mass. For more information contact St. Rocco’s rectory at 654-2914.
