After a first-round win, LWs ousted by Sem

The Wyoming Area girls field team reached another milestone for the program when they played in a District 2 playoff game on Tuesday. Playing without their forwards Serra Degnan, the division’s leading scorer, and Adrianna Vullo, both out with flu symptoms, the Lady Warriors won that first playoff game beating Northwest 3-1 in West Pittston in a District 2 Class 2A first round game.

With Degnan out Jenna Skrinak stepped up big time getting her stick in on all three goals with two assists and a goal.

“Skrinak had a really good game, her and Shiner,” said coach Maribeth Brozena. Sam Shiner scored two goals, each assisted by Skrinak. “All the girls sucked it up and made things happen.”

WA goalie Kourtney Schwerdtman stopped seven of eight Northwest shots to create breathing room.

The win sent the LWs to Kingston to play undefeated Division I champion Wyoming Seminary, where they lost on Thursday, 8-1. Ally Adonizio scored the WA goal.

Realistically, beating Sem would have been the upset of the century in the WVC, but the lopsided score hurt a little. “I was hoping for a closer game. You have to give credit to Sem. They are really skilled,” Brogna said.

The LWs finished 7-9-1. That’s over twice as many wins as in any previous season. “We accomplished a lot and I’m really proud, but there’s still a lot to learn.”
